Potter Manor
Lily Potter sat in front of the fireplace at Potter Manor sobbing, the reason for her tears? It's October 31st, Halloween. The holiday that has caused her and her family so much pain. It was on this day in 1981 that her life changed forever. A man who she and her husband James trusted betrayed them to a mad man who wanted her family dead. That night Voldemort broke into their cottage in Godric's Hollow, Lily and James had been called away to an emergency order meeting, Dumbledore's spy had alerted him that an attack on Longbottom Manor was about to occur. Members of the Order of Phoenix rushed to aid the family but James' best friend Sirius Black suddenly realized one member was missing; Peter Pettigrew, the man the Potters trusted to keep the location of their cottage secret was nowhere to be seen. At that moment Dumbledore felt a disturbance in the wards around Godric's Hollow, the Fidelius Charm had fallen. It was then that they realized why Peter was absent, Peter Pettigrew was a traitor.
Lily, James, Sirius, and Dumbledore raced back to the cottage only to find it in ruin. Lily found her mother-in-law Dorea pinned under debris with a severe broken leg but otherwise okay. She and James then raced upstairs to the nursery only to find her father-in-law Charlus dead and her son Harry crying with blood coming out of his forehead. However, it's what Lily didn't see that brought her world crashing down. Larinda "Lara" Euphemia Potter, Harry's older twin sister, was nowhere to be seen. James rushed over and scooped up Harry and checked on his wound. Meanwhile Lily had collapsed in front of the crib, tears streaming down her face. Her baby girl, her firstborn, her baby bird was gone, the only thing left was a singed spot where she must have been and a strange symbol, but Lily didn't care about any of that.
Years passed and despite their best efforts they were unable to find Lara nor were they able to learn anything about the strange symbol. Lily tried her best to move on with her life but that was easier said than done. She frequently had nightmares where Lara asked why she didn't save her and why did she leave her. James did his best to help her work through her depression but when he came home from work one day and found his mother fixing a snack for Harry who was crying because he was so hungry he knew what he had to do. After making sure Harry got something to eat, he searched the manor for his wife and eventually found her in the wine cellar, her hair disheveled, her eyes red, empty bottles scattered on the floor beside her and a picture of her holding a baby Lara. James eventually chose to retire from being an Auror so he could take care of his family full-time.
Present Day
Lily looked down at the photo of her in a hospital bed with a newborn Lara in her arms. "Oh Lara" sob "I'm sorry, I'm a terrible mother. If I had paid more attention you would still be here" She was so lost in her grief she didn't hear the sound of footsteps approaching. "Lily, it's not your fault. We all miss Lara but you can't keep blaming yourself." Startled by the sudden intrusion she looked up to see her mother-in-law Dorea Potter in front of her. "You're right" hiccup "I just miss her so so much" she replies, her eyes red from crying. Dorea sets her cane against the wall and crouches down in front of Lily. "I know you do, we all miss her. It took me months to come to terms with Charlus' death but that does not mean it still doesn't hurt." She puts her hands on Lily's shoulders and looks her right in the eyes. "You are allowed to mourn but you shouldn't let it consume your life. We all share this pain, James, Harry, you, me, Dumbledore, even Elizabeth and she hadn't even been born yet." Lily flinched at the reminder of her second daughter, when she learned she was pregnant again she and James were able to distract themselves from the pain of losing Lara but it didn't last long. When she first held baby Elizabeth in her arms she was instantly reminded of her firstborn.
