Now that Norman was back, Emma could go back to work without worrying nonstop about James. She had to be honest, she had missed going to work.
Everyone greeted her like usual as soon as she entered the police station. Everyone was happy to see her back with her good old cheerful self.
Today, she was on a serious case.
They had been called by one of the neighbors because they had heard gunshots and screams a few days earlier. They said they were worried because they knew the couple had children.
The house was already blocked when they arrived on the scene. Emma and one of her colleagues went to ask more questions.
« We know that the husband and the wife were arguing a lot. The kids would come to my house when their parents were arguing. We don't know how bad the arguing was so yeah. We also don't know where the kids are. We're worried for them. Oh! I also remember seeing some men in black enter and leave the house this morning. »
« Thank you sir, for telling us all of this. It's already helping us a lot. And don't worry, we'll find them and make sure they are alright. »
« Emma! Come here please! »
Emma turned around towards her other colleague that was going towards the house. Once in front of the front door, they looked at each other and entered the house.
Emma let out a gasp at the horror in front of her.
Despite being in the police for some years now, never in her whole life had she seen something like this. Lying on the ground, eyes turning white and the skin getting paler. The woman was clearly dead for some days now. There was blood everywhere and you could see the bullet hole in the woman's head.
A little further, on the couch of the living room, the dead body of the husband was sitting there. He also had a hole in his head as well as a gun in his hands. The man seemed to be dead recently compared to his wife. Most probably this morning.
Emma felt her heartbeat accelerate in her chest. She took some deep breaths to try and calm herself down. Her colleague was already crouching down near the wife's body. The cheetah decided to go explore the rest of the house to see if she could find anything else, maybe find something that would tell them where the two missing children were.
It didn't take her long to fall on a door where blood was coming out from under it. The ginger-haired young woman held back her breath and closed her eyes as she put her hand on the door handle. She opened the door and reopened her eyes. Emma immediately put a hand over her mouth to block a scream of horror.
The two missing children were lying on the ground, lifeless. They had both been shot in the belly and had probably died from blood loss. Or that's what it looked like at least. Emma didn't want to think about how painful it should've been for those little girls.
She holds back her tears as she reluctantly approaches the two bodies. She felt her throat tighten. She couldn't bear the thought of someone able to kill their own kids like that.
To her surprise, she saw something move beside her. She looked at it but saw nothing. Emma waited to see if, whatever it was, was going to move again. It did. And it was the little girl! The older one of the two!
The cheetah immediately went to her side.
« Hey, hey, sweetheart. Don't move. »
Emma tried to keep her voice the most reassuring she could. The girl looked at her with so much fear that it broke the police's heart. She took her walkie-talkie to ask for help as she tried to stop the bleeding of the girl's wound with a handmade bandage with one of the blankets that was still clean. She tried to do the same to the younger one as well.
