***Present ***
I breathed out, my aching head has finally ceased. I looked up to see Kayla and Leah looking at me with stunned and worried expressions, they were others but those two emotions were more.
For instance, Leah looked like she wants me to quickly tell her what happens next while Kayla looks like she wants to ask me how I was.
I mean I'm OK and standing right in front of them, and its all ready a thing of the past but I'm still happy to know that she's concerned. I myself I'm not even sure if I'm OK or not. I smiled at her to assure her.
"What happened next!" Leah yelled with anticipation.
"This is not a movie Leah!" Kayla frowned at her.
Leah, realising her mistake she said, "Sorry." In a low voice, but you could still see her silently urging me.
"Hhh, It's OK." I said. "Let's see,..." I put my fingers under my chin in thought.
"The next thing I can remember is waking up in a cage surrounded by darkness,..."
...
***Flashback ***
"Ayyy, your finally up. Thought you will sleep all day long." I heard a voice.
'Who was that? That doesn't sound like Amelia.'
I blinked my eyes a couple of times to adjust my eyesight.
Finally being able to see a little clearer, I saw a woman looking at me in ridicule. Surveying her, I think I saw someone behind her.
"I don't know what to do with you for now, so just stay here while I figure it out." She said then left.
Following her movement, I saw her open a door, letting light fill in the dark place, also making my vision clearer.
"Are you coming or not?" She said not looking back.
Confused, I wondered if she was talking to me.
"I'm coming Mother." I heard a child's voice. I looked back to where they woman was standing before and saw a child not older than me, looking haggard. She was covered in bruises too.
What caught me off guard was her eyes. It wasn't filled with hopelessness like you will expect her to have or tears from all the bruises and blood oozing out.
It looked like it was waiting? Silently hoping for something to happen. I don't know, I'm not sure.
That was the last I saw of them together until a week after. I hard been left with no food or water I'm sure of that, but every two or three days, the girl would sneak in and give me a loaf of bread and some water.
It looks like that was all she had, because I would see her turning her face away or holding her stomach in hunger a few times.
...
Two weeks later, I was sitting down on the ground frightened. Last night, the girl was caught given me food by her mother.
Her mother became enraged and dragged her away as she pleaded. The next thing I heard was the girls screaming voice throughout the night.
I was so worried and anxious about what happened to her.
CREAK
I heard the door creak open. 'Is it the woman?' I got scared. I looked up and saw it was the girl. I breathed a sigh of relief. She limped to my cage in pain and grabbed the lock.
I watched her confusedly as she brought out a key that she had hidden and opened the cage.
"Come out, we don't have time. " She said in pain.
I followed her as she led me to another door that I didn't know was there before. She opened the door and I closed my eyes due to the sudden brightness.
"Are we outside?" I asked, my voice dry from lack off water and tired.
"Take this orb. I have all ready set it to take you to the nearest police station. Follow it, run straight and don't look back." She said.
"What about you?" I asked her. I was overjoyed at the fact that I could finally go back home but I was also concerned about her, after all, she helped me throughout my time here.
"No." She shook her head, she smiled at me for the very first time as she said, "I have to stay here and take care of Mother."
"But won't you be in danger!" I reasoned, raising my voice.
"I know mother more than you, she's the kindest woman in the world." She said still smiling, I wanted to talk more but she stopped me.
"Now go, before mother comes back." She pushed me forward and smiled at me. 'GO' she mouthed. That was the last I saw of her.
...
***Present ***
"You know some people are just, just, arghhhh I can't even find the proper word!" Leah aggravated. I silently nodded in support.
"I mean they are paying you, aren't they? It's not like they abused you! Nobody forced you!" She continued.
"Also, peopleneed to be careful about who they let into their homes and who they leave to babysit their childrens. The world is no longer safe!" She complained, but it is true.
"Can you remember the face of the girl?" Kayla asked, making Leah paused.
I thought carefully, "No, I can't. It's blurry. It has been long since it happened." I said, she looked disappointed?
'What will...'
"How did you get through all that?" Leah asked, breaking me from my thoughts.
"It was hard, but it all got better ones I got to know you both. Especially Kayla. She's like I sister to me." I smiled at them.
Both Leah and Kayla's expressions instantly changed. 'Was it because they were touched by what I said?'
"Glad I was of help." Kayla said, Looking a little bit sad.
"All right! I'll try and see if I can get Mum's necklace and check for any clues as to whether it is the genuine one or a copy. I have to go now. We'll be in touch." Kayla hurriedly said and packed her stuff.
"Kayla!..." Leah called out but before any of us could get what was going on, she was all ready out.
"What was that about?" I asked Leah.
"Sigh, let's end it here today. See ya!" She also grab her stuff and left.
"O...K, I feel like I've missed something." I shook my head and also got my stuff. 'Maybe Kayla had something urgent to do.' I reasoned.
