After Minji dragged me back to the mansion, I was left in the same room I had slept in the night before. I heard the click of the lock, meaning it was locked from the outside. I pounded on the doors to be let out, but no one listened.I had seen some maids on the stairs watching me as I was taken upstairs, but they didn't seem shocked by my screams, as if this was normal. I tried to open the windows, but they were already locked from the outside too.
Who was I? Rapunzel?
When I realized nothing was going to work, I gave up and sank into a deep sleep. I woke up with the setting sun. How long had I slept? My throat felt like I had swallowed a dozen cacti. I grabbed the glass of water on the bedside table and drank half of it. I was still wearing the once-sparkling silk dress, now stained with mud and even torn in some parts.
What was happening?
I remembered how I had assumed Kim Minji was a good woman for offering me help for one night, but I was gravely mistaken. There was something hidden in those brown eyes that I hadn't noticed. Behind that charming exterior was a much more dangerous woman than I had ever imagined. My wrist still had red marks from her grip when she got angry.
I heard the door open after what seemed like hours, and Minji calmly walked into the room. "Did you sleep well?" she asked, holding a tray of food.
I didn't respond.
She put the tray on the bedside table and sat on the edge of the bed. "I asked you a question, and I expect an answer. Did you sleep well?"
"Yes," I murmured softly.
"Good," she gave me a satisfied smile. "You missed lunch, so I thought you might be hungry."
I looked at her directly. "I want to leave here."
She suddenly stood up and opened the closet. "Don't you like the clothes? Maybe you can tell Jihyo the type of dresses you like, and she can help you choose."
"I said I wanted to leave this place."
"Honey, you're not going anywhere. This is your home," Minji said as if it were the most obvious thing.
And I was stupid for asking her that question. "Why are you doing this to me? What do you want from me?"
"I want you to stay here with me," she said.
"Do you understand that forcing me to live with you against my will is a crime?"
"Yes, I also know that killing your father and fleeing the scene is against the law," she took her iPhone out of her denim pocket. "You can walk away from here, I'll even tell the guard to open the gates, then I'll call the agent myself and tell him that a woman got into my car, took refuge in my house without my permission, and is threatening my life."
I gritted my teeth; she was blackmailing me. "You are fucking crazy."
She chuckled, as if I had told her a joke. "I've been called worse."
"Is that why you brought me here? Because I asked you to help me?"
Minji took slow steps in the room, her lips curved into a sly smile. "I saved your life. You owe me."
"This was your plan from the beginning. Help me and then blackmail me into staying here."
"They say never trust strangers, especially the kind ones, but I guess it's too late for that," Minji closed the distance between us and ran her finger down my cheek. I flinched. She whispered slowly in my ear. "This world is made up of monsters, Hanni, people aren't as good and pure as you think. A person sees a beautiful damsel in distress, who needs someone to come as a knight in shining armor, and then every determination shatters, there is an urge to possess that beautiful woman and keep her for himself." I stayed still as she kissed the side of my cheek and moved to my jawline. "You are so beautiful."
