I woke up to the sound of soft shuffling. When I opened my eyes, I saw the maids packing something.
Confused, I glanced at the wall clock.
It was three in the morning.
I looked at Minji's side of the bed and found it empty.
I watched the girls start taking my clothes out of the closet and packing them into a suitcase.
What's happening?
"What are you doing?" I asked her. "And didn't you knock on my door? How can you just barge into my room?"
The other girl closed another suitcase that contained Minji's clothes and handed it to Seokmin, who took the suitcase and disappeared from the room.
"I asked you a question. Why are you packing my things without my permission?"
"Orders from Mrs. Kim," Gaeul said softly, bowed, and resumed packing.
None of them were interested in finding out if I wanted my things packed or not, as if Minji had programmed them to follow her instructions.
I left the room and went down the dark stairs to find Minji talking to Seokmin.
Daehan was asleep in Minji's arms.
I ran towards them, needing to know what was happening in the middle of the night.
When Seokmin noticed me walking towards them, he whispered something to Minji, leaned in, and excused himself.
"Minji, what's going on? Why are they packing my things?"
Minji turned to look at me. "We're leaving."
I thought I hadn't heard her right. "What do you mean? Where are we going?"
"We're moving to our old mansion on Kim's Island."
"Why?" For some reason, Minji seemed reluctant to explain in detail, and I hated that.
"If Haerin wants this house, she can have it, but I don't want us living under the same roof as her."
"I'm not going anywhere," I said quietly.
Minji stared at me with her cold, usual defiant look. "What did you just say?"
"I said I'm not going anywhere," I repeated, pulling Daehan into my arms. "And Daehan isn't going anywhere either."
I started to move away from her, towards the stairs. Minji grabbed my arm tightly, waking Daehan. I pulled away from her grip, placed Daehan on his feet, and instructed him to run back to his room upstairs. He didn't need to be part of our daily fights.
"Daehan, go to your room," I said.
But Daehan stayed there, hugging his teddy bear to his chest. "Daehan...," Minji grabbed my jaw and forced me to make eye contact.
"Why don't you want to come with me?"
"Because I've had enough of your lies. This is my home, and I'm staying here," I threw my words at her face.
Minji chuckled sarcastically. "Isn't it because of Haerin?"
I crossed my arms over my chest, feeling the fire burning in her eyes, the anger simmering inside her.
Daehan had crawled under a table in the corner and was watching us silently.
My poor boy.
"You know what?" Minji said. "I don't care anymore. If you want to live here with Haerin, fine," the next thing she did was walk over to where Daehan was hiding and lifted him in her arms too aggressively, forcefully. "But my boy is coming with me."
