H A N N I"What do we do now, Haerin?" I questioned.
Haerin took a sip of her coffee, looking out at the open courtyard.
The sky turned a crimson hue as the sun began to set, hiding behind the lush trees of the forest. The wind that blew hit my face and ruffled my dress. I pushed the loose hair behind my ear.
"Minji needs to confess. We have enough evidence to prove all her crimes and she has no way out."
I nodded, crossing my arms over my chest.
I couldn't believe that Minji would ever confess to her crimes. She wouldn't.
I couldn't erase the image of how her brown eyes looked at me as she entered the police car, as if she wanted to convey her message that she would return.
"I remember Minji telling me she has some of the best lawyers in the country. What if she spins a story and the court believes her?"
I knew I was being paranoid, but I had every right to be considering what Minji was capable of. She had a reputation for getting out of any situation.
Haerin sighed. "Hanni, she has murdered people and we have evidence to back that up. She abused you and tortured you mentally for over four years. Even if Minji manages to find the best fucking lawyer in the world, there's not much they can do." She scrolled through her iPad. "Oh, look, your wife has made the headlines."
Billionaire and CEO of Kim Industries, Kim Minji, victim of conspiracies.
I gaped at the headline and Haerin just laughed.
I gave her a furious look, annoyed that she was lightening the situation. "I don't think it's funny, Haerin."
Haerin was too confident and underestimated Minji even after what happened yesterday.
Haerin continued, "People talk and make up stories. Minji has done a lot of charity work in the past, always maintained a good reputation in front of the media and that's why it's hard for them to think she was trying to kill her own wife. People believe what they see and what they see now is a rich, innocent woman framed for a crime by her wife and her half-sister."
"So, we wait until she confesses?"
"That's the plan," Haerin said.
I remembered how I had followed Haerin's plan and held my breath when Minji had strangled me.
I think I might have fainted for a few minutes when they secretly took me to the hospital and revived me with some of the best doctors under Haerin's orders and supervision.
Meanwhile, a similarly looking woman, unidentified, was taken from the hospital morgue, dressed in the clothes I wore that night, and taken to the forest for a burial.
Minji hadn't been able to see the body being lowered but had been close enough to see the fabric of her clothes sticking out of the mud. Minji's mind had been preoccupied with the thought that she had killed me and didn't focus on the details.
Haerin's plan, though a bit complicated, was simple.
Drive Minji crazy enough so she would eventually come out and confess to her crimes.
And for a while, I believed Haerin's plan was working until Minji stood at the edge with Daehan in her arms and my entire resolve slipped.
I felt Haerin take my hand in hers. "Minji won't get away with this, Hanni. I promise."
"Did you really push Sullyoon from the third floor?" I asked without thinking.
She raised an eyebrow. "Are you really doubting me?"
