THREE YEARS LATERHanni drove to the hospital to see Minji. Her three-year-old daughter, Hyein, was in the back seat.
After Minji went into a coma, Hanni realized she was pregnant.
The sweet little angel was born in the same hospital where her mother was still in a coma, eight months at that time.
Hanni had brought the beautiful baby wrapped in a blanket to the ICU room and told Minji that she was now officially the mother of a girl. Hanni thought Minji deserved to know, even though she was not conscious.
She parked the car in the hospital parking lot and headed to see her. As always, Minji was lying in bed with tubes running through her body. Three years had passed, and the doctors said there was no hope.
There were moments when Hanni was tempted to disconnect her ventilator and end it, but Hanni was not a killer.
Although, honestly, she hoped Minji wouldn't wake up.
Days passed similarly until one night, Hanni received a call from the hospital, and the phone literally slipped and fell to the floor.
She couldn't believe the words until she saw them with her own eyes.
When she arrived at the hospital, she noticed that Haerin was already there and was furiously talking to Dr. Choi. She handed Hyein over and walked to the room, and for a moment, she couldn't hear her surroundings as she ran to the room as if her life depended on it.
She opened the doors to find Minji propped up in bed talking to a nurse.
Their eyes met, her brown eyes piercing through her. "Minji..." said Hanni, her voice nervous and strangely enchanted.
Minji blinked, looking confused. "I'm sorry," her voice was a little tense. "Do we know each other?"
It was Hanni's turn to look surprised. Hanni approached her bed. "Don't you remember me? I'm Hanni."
Minji shook her head and smiled warmly. She didn't remember being on the receiving end of that smile during their eight years of marriage. "I'm so sorry. My head... it hurts. I can't remember anything."
Haerin appeared in the room, carrying Hyein in her arms. "Minji, she's your wife. And this is Hyein, your daughter."
Minji looked at Hanni and Hyein.
Sadness crossed her features. "I have a beautiful family, and I... I don't remember anything."
"It's a shame, but don't worry. You'll be able to remember in due time," Haerin said with a hint of sarcasm.

Hanni visited Minji again the next day, after she had woken up from her three-year coma. Surprisingly, she seemed different.
She was sitting upright, with a book open in front of her.
When she saw Hanni, she closed the book and greeted her.
"Did you bring me something?" Minji asked when she saw a small box in her hand.
"I thought I could cook something for you," said Hanni. "You always loved my cooking, although I'm not sure if the doctor will allow it."
"Haerin can make an exception for once, you know, since we're family..." Minji winked, and Hanni's heart did a quick somersault.
She didn't think her heart was capable of that feeling.
Hanni couldn't help but smile.
Minji continued. "You look beautiful today."
"Thank you, Minji."
"I know I probably lost a lot of time with you and the kids over the last three years. I want to talk about us, Hanni," Minji said, and for a moment in her life, she could see sincerity burning in those eyes.
"What do you want to know?"
"How about you tell me what kind of wife I used to be? Because you are a beautiful and loving woman, and I am very lucky, but I would really appreciate some facts to get to know you and us better."
Hanni laughed and felt her cheeks burn from an authentic compliment from Minji.
A beautiful and loving wife.
Hanni thought for a moment before answering. "You were a kind wife who always took care of your family, never raised your voice, and loved me and the kids every second and every minute of your life..." before she could continue, tears ran down her cheeks. "We both loved each other so much that every time you had a business trip, you came back in a day because you missed me so much. We went on picnics almost every weekend."
Minji looked at her in awe, she put her hand on Hanni's. "Well, I'm glad because I sound like the kind of wife I always wanted to be." She raised her other hand, and Hanni shuddered, but the tips of her thumb brushed her cheek to wipe away her tears. "I just woke up yesterday, Hanni, I hardly remember you, but I have a feeling I've loved you for a long time."
Hanni's heart raced. "It's okay if you don't remember anything. It's absolutely fine if you don't remember the last eight years. We can start over."
Minji smiled with her usual smile that melts anyone. "I guess that sounds like a plan."
Hanni met Haerin outside the hospital room. Haerin had her usual white coat but stopped dead in her tracks when she saw her.
"Someone seems happy," she said, staring at the closed door of the room.
"What are we going to say when she realizes she was in jail?" I asked.
"We'll lie to her," Haerin said as an obvious choice.
"Will she be prosecuted?"
Haerin laughed. "She doesn't remember anything, Hanni, and that makes her innocent. No matter what crime she committed, if she doesn't remember, I don't think the state can do much," she added. "She's back to how she used to be before everything went wrong."
"What do you mean?"
"Believe it or not, Minji was normal before Sullyoon died and before the power of succeeding in the company went to her head. Let's say she's reverted to her old personality. The injury was so traumatic that her brain may have erased everything it unconsciously wanted to forget."
Hanni looked directly at Haerin, and although she hadn't said a word, Haerin knew what her sister-in-law was about to say.
"Do what you have to do, don't let her remember anything."
Haerin gave her a complicit smile. "I'll work on it, but actually, it's not in my hands."
"I want this Minji. I need this Minji. The old Minji died during the accident," Hanni said. "But the woman in that room right now is my wife."
Haerin laughed. "I promise you. I'll make sure the old Minji never resurfaces."
