I was sitting in the waiting room with my hands in my lap. Blood stains covered my dress. My mind replayed the scene that took place at the mansion an hour ago: Minji aiming at Haerin and shooting, and Haerin falling to the ground.

Haerin seemed surprised by the turn of events, and I regretted bringing Haerin into my messed-up life. If I hadn't told her anything, if I hadn't asked for her help, Minji wouldn't have shot her at all.

I kept saying, "You'll be fine."

And with the remaining energy Haerin had, she repeated, "Take Daehan and leave."

I didn't waste any time and called an ambulance immediately.

Saving Haerin was my priority. As much as I wanted to take my son and leave Minji's life, I couldn't let Haerin die because of my selfishness.

I stared at the door of the ER, waiting and praying that the doctor wouldn't tell me she was dead. I had been waiting for almost three hours.

If something happened to Haerin...

Hospitals always made me nervous and sick.

A stretcher passed by me, a woman bleeding severely and a child crying as nurses hurried around them.

Some nurses had offered me coffee from the vending machine, but I declined. I felt nauseous from the metallic smell of the bloodstain, the lack of sleep, and the anxiety.

A young doctor came out of the ER. I stood up, agitation brewing inside me. "Doctor, how is Haerin?"

He seemed a bit surprised by my appearance, and I couldn't blame him. I probably looked like a walking corpse.

"Are you Haerin's...?"

"I'm her sister-in-law, Kim Hanni," I explained. "Is she okay?"

"Yes, she's lucky the bullet only grazed her, and there was no damage to her tissues or organs, which is a relief. You brought her in time," the doctor gave me a reassuring smile. "Since she's out of danger, she'll be transferred to a private room and then we have to..."

I had already tuned out of the doctor's voice.

Haerin was alive. She was safe. And that was all that mattered.

"Mrs. Kim?"

I snapped out of my thoughts. "Yes?"

"You have a wound on your forehead, the nurse will treat it," he said.

"Can I see Haerin?"

"She's awake, but due to the medication, she might be a bit drowsy. I suggest you don't put any mental pressure on her because..."

I placed my hand on his. "I assure you, doctor, I won't bother her."

The doctor remained silent for a moment, probably wondering if he should trust my word, and finally nodded. "Okay, I'd like you to complete some formalities, so follow me."

The doctor seemed tired, so a nurse cleaned my wounds, and I took a quick shower.

Seokmin brought me a pair of clean jeans and a t-shirt.

Somehow I felt better, aside from the bandage marring my forehead and the dark circles under my eyes, I looked okay. Like a person who just survived a natural calamity.

A few minutes later, I was standing behind the ER door. I pushed it slightly and entered the room. The strong smell of antiseptic, detergent, and a faint aroma of medicine filled the air.

Haerin was propped up against the bed, with her chest bandaged and her legs covered by a blanket. There was a monitor beside her that emitted a constant sound. The IV was connected to her arm.
