My cheek felt like it was burning like hell.

And the past few months came back to me in quick flashes. Minji following me, trying to impress me, and then proposing to me. My lower lip trembled, and I felt betrayed and deceived.

I was so afraid to look her in the eyes, and when I did, she was furious. She grabbed my arm and helped me to my feet.

Her brown eyes bore into mine. Slowly, she said, "I want to know the truth."

My throat went dry. "What are you talking about?"

She grabbed my jaw, her fingers digging into my cheeks. I screamed. "I'm not that stupid, Hanni. I saw the way you two looked at each other. You still have something with him, don't you?"

"You're being ridiculous. There's nothing between us. The last time I saw him was two years ago when we broke up. I swear," I pleaded.

She slapped my other cheek.

It hurt.

The glass with her drink shattered on the floor. And the pieces of glass reminded me of my life. Broken.

"Why are you doing this?" I asked.

"Let me make a few things clear, Hanni. I won't tolerate games. If I find him near you, I'll torture and kill him slowly. I love you, and I don't fucking share what's mine with anyone."

Tears rolled down my cheeks. "But why do you hit me?"

Minji looked at me for a few seconds, and her expression softened. "You have to promise me you won't look at anyone else."

"I won't!" It was more of a plea for help. "But Min, I'm your wife, you can't hit me like this."

I realized she was ignoring what I was saying when she approached and kissed the top of my head, smiling as if she hadn't slapped me twice. "Why don't you ask Mashiro to clean up this mess?"

That night, I couldn't sleep much; disturbing thoughts were rattling me.

What if she was still the same abuser?

What was I going to do now?

There was no way out this time because now I was legally married to Minji. And she would use everything against me if I told her I wanted a separation.

I shuddered at the idea.

Tears blurred my vision, and I couldn't contain the sob that escaped.

I felt the bed move and an arm wrapped around my stomach. "What's wrong, Han?"

I shook my head. "Nothing."

She forced me to look at her and ran her thumb over my cheek. "Why are you crying, baby?"

"You hurt me," I cried into the sheets.

"Oh, baby. I'm so sorry," Minji said, kissing my cheek. "I didn't mean to hit you like that," she played with my hair. "Just don't drive me crazy. Because when I get mad, bad things happen, honey. We love each other, and I want it to stay that way between us. I can't think of someone coming in and taking you away from me. I can't live without you, Han." I gave her a weak smile. Minji continued, "My father used to hate me," her sudden revelation surprised me because she never liked talking about her childhood. "You see, my mother was the housemaid, my father's mistress, and I lived in the servant's quarters. I was an illegitimate child." She took my hand. "Nobody loves me, Hanni." Her words made me feel so sorry for her. "When I was four years old, my father decided to acknowledge me, and I was accepted into the family. But a year later, my stepmother gave birth to a baby. I've been neglected my whole life, Han, I never mattered to them. I was so lonely."

"I'm so sorry, Minji," I said.

"But now I have you. And that's all I want," she said.

"I'll always be here for you," I said sincerely.

Minji pulled me closer into her arms and kissed the hollow of my neck. "I love you so much."

"I know," I said.

"If you leave me again, I'll find you and bring you back no matter where you are because that's how important you are to me."

I smiled.

I was going to take that as a threat because that's what I thought it was, even though her expressions were gentle.

That night I told myself everything was going to be okay.

"Chaewon called this morning," I informed Minji as we were having breakfast at the table.

She looked up from her iPad. "Yes?"

I was going to lose my appetite if she refused.

Casually, I took a bite of my eggs with avocado toast and blueberries and continued. "She wanted to know if I could see her today. For lunch and some shopping. So, I was wondering if I could..."

Minji looked at me for a minute. Her brown eyes shining in the sunlight. "Is it just going to be Chaewon?"

"Yes."

Minji smiled sweetly. "Of course, honey, you can go. She's your friend."

"Thank you, Minji."

After breakfast, Minji handed me the keys to a convertible Porsche and also her credit card, kissing me on the forehead. "Have fun, Han. Don't look at the price tags, just buy everything you want. After yesterday, I suppose it's the least I can do."

My wife is very generous.

I thought.

Then I realized it was probably a bribe for her lousy behavior yesterday.

At noon, I was going to pick Chaewon up from her apartment; it took me thirty minutes to get there. She whistled when she sat in the passenger seat of the car. "Perks of marrying a rich woman," she laughed. And I laughed with her.

We decided to go see a movie, a romantic comedy with Adam Sandler in it. We laughed throughout the movie, and Chaewon ate most of my popcorn, but I didn't protest. I enjoyed the time with my friend and really wanted to forget what happened yesterday. And I hoped never to see Minji's bad side again.

If I managed to keep her happy, there would be no problem. She even let me take one of her cars and allowed me to use her credit card, which was proof that I meant a lot to her.

Chaewon and I were doing some shopping at clothing stores when she grabbed my hand. "Hanni, what is this mark?"

Shit! I forgot to hide the red mark from Minji's hand on my wrist.

"Oh, it's a kind of allergy," I lied.

Chaewon gave me her don't-believe-anything-you-say look. "Are you sure?"

"Yes," I gave her a small smile.

I changed the subject after that. We were looking for a place to eat, and Chaewon suggested a nearby restaurant that serves excellent seafood. I wasn't a fan of seafood, but Chaewon seemed really excited, so I thought why the hell not give it a try. The restaurant had a nice ambiance with elegant decor and cute lights hanging from the ceiling. Chaewon was a shrewd woman and had already made a reservation, so the waitress led us to an isolated table in the corner.

When we arrived at our table, I was surprised to find two more men already waiting for us. A thin guy with long dark hair down to his shoulders, and the other was blonde with striking blue eyes.

I shot a glance at Chaewon, but she seemed oblivious to my gesture. Lunch with a few more people was not on my to-do list.

"Hanni, I want you to meet Jaehyun," she pointed to the guy; by the way she was smiling, I wondered if he was her new boyfriend. "And his friend, Sungho. They'll be joining us for lunch. It was a last-minute plan. I hope you don't mind."

"Of course not," I said.

It wouldn't be bad.

Besides, it was just lunch.

Minji wouldn't even know.
