"It's a charming necklace, Hanni," Yuna complimented, her eyes on my neck.Lee Yuna was the wife of one of Minji's business partners and usually accompanied her husband, Heeseung, to all elite parties.
I touched my necklace. "Thanks. It was an anniversary gift from Minji," I forced my best fake smile, not that she noticed.
Yuna nodded, her eyes shining with pure envy despite having spent much more than I had. I also had the impression she was in love with Minji. I wished I cared.
"How lucky. My husband barely has time to buy me gifts. I'm always shopping alone, which reminds me, what are you doing on Thursday?" she asked.
I was free on Thursday; in fact, I was free most days. I didn't have much work to do around the house with people to help, plus my only job now was taking care of Daehan, which I was very happy with.
Yuna had a bad habit of dragging me into her little escapades where cocktails mostly ended with prostitutes trying their hardest to make Yuna feel loved. And the last time, I barely made it out without Minji noticing.
I wondered if I would be in a coffin if Minji found out I paid a girl just to vent my frustration. And no, I didn't mean sex. I meant talking, mostly telling the poor girl about my abusive marriage.
"Actually, Daehan has something at school, so..." I lied.
"Oh, honey, you can always ask Seokmin or someone else to do that job," she said, taking a sip of her drink.
"I prefer to do it myself, Yuna."
"You're no fun," she giggled.
I noticed she had been waving her hand in my face for the past hour, so I decided to give her what she wanted. "I love that new ring. Where's it from?" I asked, feigning enthusiasm.
Sullyoon giggled. "Tiffany's. Heeseung told me to pick out the best," Yuna babbled on and on about a new mansion they planned to buy this year.
I was trying to think of a good excuse to leave this conversation.
My cheeks hurt from the fake smile, my feet were killing me from the high heels.
I needed a break.
I excused myself and started to leave the house, away from the crowd and chaos.
I was in a hurry to get out of those stiletto heels, not understanding why Minji thought it was okay to parade around in these, it wasn't like I was having a fashion show on the runway.
My mind was occupied with a lot of things and maybe that's why I didn't see the waiter with a tray of drinks, whom I stumbled into, sending the glasses flying.
They crashed to the floor and an unbearable pain shot through my ankle as I stumbled and fell to the ground.
I closed my eyes and wished for the pain to subside, wondering what punishment Minji would give me for being so clumsy in public.
Some women rushed to help me to my feet, but I couldn't stand. It hurt so much.
"Try to move your ankle, Hanni," Yuna suggested as she touched my leg.
"I can't," I cried out.
"Can I see?" All heads turned toward the owner of the voice.
A tall woman in a navy blue body-hugging dress was standing in front of me, her light brown hair, brown eyes, and perfectly sculpted face with a dimple in her chin. She was probably my age, a year difference at most. Her demeanor screamed power and, if that wasn't enough, she was incredibly beautiful.
