It was Saturday, and the three of us spent the evening with Sunghoon in his small condo after dinner. He had cooked Daehan's favorite macaroni and had tried to impress me with his grilled Parmesan chicken.
I had to admit that Sunghoon was a great cook.
I watched as Daehan and Sunghoon played PlayStation like a father and his son, while Hyein played with a doll on the carpeted floor.
Around 10 p.m., Sunghoon drove us back to my house, which was only a few blocks away.
The kids had fallen asleep in the back seat.
When Sunghoon leaned in to kiss me, I turned away.
It was rude to behave that way, but all day long, Minji was on my mind.
And technically, I wasn't even divorced yet.
"I'm sorry, Sunghoon," I said. "I'm just tired."
Sunghoon's eyes were evaluating me as if I was taking a lie detector test. "There's something I want to ask you, Hanni. Can you be honest with me?"
"Of course."
"That woman we saw yesterday at the mall. Is she your wife and therefore, Daehan and Hyein's mother?"
I couldn't lie about it now.
"Yes."
Sunghoon nodded knowingly. "Does she want to come back?"
"I don't know, Sunghoon."
"Did she hurt you in the past?"
My throat tightened.
I nodded, struggling to hold back tears.
"Oh, Hanni. I'm so sorry."
Sunghoon and I talked for a while. I skipped the details and told him why we separated, leaving out the part about Minji being a disgraced multimillionaire or the part where I was initially kidnapped.
I put the kids to bed that night and lay on the couch to watch TV when the doorbell rang.
I thought it was Sunghoon again, so without looking out the window, I opened the door to find Minji at the entrance, looking well-groomed and like the old Minji I had known.
I crossed my arms over my chest. "What do you want?"
Her eyes were red as if she had been drinking. "You lied to me."
"I lied about what?"
"Hyein..." her voice trailed off. "She's my daughter, isn't she?"
"Go away, Minji," I said.
"Please," she said.
That was the first time I heard her say it so sincerely.
Her expressions seemed like a knife had stabbed her heart. "Let me see her. Just once."
Despite everything, I felt sorry for her.
"We're not even divorced yet, so I'm still your wife, like it or not. I just want to see my kids, Hanni."
She was trying to remind me that technically, I was still hers.
I slammed the door in her face and heard the loud banging on the door.
A few minutes after a bit more begging and trying to manipulate me into opening the door, she left.
I knew Minji wasn't the type of person who gave up easily.
I was afraid of what Daehan might think when he realized his mother was back.
And as expected, Minji kept showing up at my door every day, doing everything she could to convince me to let her see Daehan and Hyein.
