"Maybe things just can't go back to the way they were"
3RD POV:
Steve awoke to the glow of morning light filtering into the room. He looked down to see Y/N still fast asleep, her head nestled perfectly upon his pillow. She looked so beautiful and at peace that it made his heart ache.
Unable to stop himself, he gently caressed her cheek, marveling at how soft her skin was. Y/N leaned into his touch ever so slightly, a hint of a smile on her lips. It filled Steve's heart with indescribable warmth to see her react even in sleep to his touch.
Having her this close felt like the most natural thing in the world to Steve. Somewhere along the way, his best friend had become the love of his life. He wanted nothing more than to stay like this, just the two of them suspended in time, existing only for each other.
But Steve also felt a pang of sadness. He was terrified that if he confessed his true feelings, he could lose Y/N's friendship forever. She meant everything to him, and the thought of not having her in his life crushed him.
He had been a fool to try to move on from his feelings for her by starting a relationship with Nancy. He realized now that no one could ever take Y/N's place in his heart. He would always love her and keep her first, before any other woman.
But for now, Steve just wanted to enjoy holding Y/N close. He gently stroked Y/N's hair as she continued to sleep. He cherished this quiet moment together. As long as he had Y/N by his side as his friend, that was enough for him. He would do anything to make her happy, even if that meant silencing the voice in his heart calling out for more.

Here Steve stood, facing Nancy after she had called him while he was engaged in conversation with the new kid, Billy Hargrove.
"Where were you this morning? I missed first period," Nancy questioned, drawing a sigh from Steve.
"Look, Nancy, no beating around the bush. I just want to ask you one question. Do you love me?" Steve inquired, fully anticipating the answer.
"Why are you asking?" she queried.
"I think you don't remember what happened yesterday. You said we killed Barb, and I don't care because I'm bullshit. Our whole relationship is bullshit, and everything is bullshit, bullshit, bullshit. Also, you said you don't love me," Steve expressed, his frustration evident. It wasn't about her lack of love for him; it was more about how she had called him bullshit.
"I'm drunk, Steve. I don't remember anything," Nancy replied.
"So, you have the right to call me bullshit?" he questioned. Nancy looked down guiltily.
