Y/n doesn't remember much of that morning after. Just that when it was time for breakfast Tessa wasn't there. The adults were talking about something, Y/n wasn't listening, feeling the guilt eat away at him. Why did she lie? He should be the one grounded, not her. Because of this, he couldn't stomach his breakfast, opting not to eat despite starving. He just couldn't stomach it for whatever reason.
After breakfast he immediately went to check on Tessa, confused as a drone walked out, seeming to hold a golden key, not bothering to acknowledge the boy. Entering inside, he could see Tessa sitting on her bed, rubbing her wrist, gaze downcast to the floor, still in her sleepwear. He stood in the doorway, arms crossed and letting out a huff. “Why'd you lie?” He huffed, demanding for an actual answer, unwilling to forget her act from yesterday and how she avoided it. Tessa’s expression faltered a slight bit, gaze shifting towards the floor before looking back.
“I Just…. Didn't want ya to get in trouble too. I swear, besides it's no biggie, promises.” She answered, voice shaky and giving her best faux smile. Y/n could feel something was off, but was idiotic to not further push it. Instead opting for letting out a sigh, climbing onto the bed next to her, dangling his legs off the bed. “Fine, you get a pass, but just this once. Next time you do something stupid, I'm taking the blame!” He declared, earning a quiet chuckle from the young girl, shaking her head at his promise.
"Alright alright, you can cop the blame next time. But let's forget about that for now and go do something fun, yea?" She attempted to push away the topic, feeling only some sense of guilt for lying yet again, hopping off the bed. Y/n nodded his head, unaware of her false message following after. Though he couldn't help but notice Tessa seemed a bit slower than usual, or that her movements seemed more sluggish….? Did she not get enough sleep? Her movements seemed a bit more... Stiff he wanted to say, not as jumpy or animated. It wasn't anything too strange, he's had his own off days. Plus she had to clean all alone yesterday, of course she'd be more tired than normal!
He'd mentally scold himself, feeling like an idiot for forgetting something so obvious. But even then, as time went on, Y/n noticed she seemed to have a lot of off days. Even thinking back to the first month he lived there, about 2 weeks in, there was roughly a day or two when Tessa just didn't speak to him. And even when she would speak, she had her head down the whole time. But that wasn't the only weirdest thing he noticed, because she also had long sleeves on that day!
Now granted that's not an issue, he ain't the fashion police, he coulda cared less, but Tessa rarely wore long sleeves, she always preferred short sleeves, at most going to her elbows but even then he'd hear her mumble something about how stupid it looked. But as the months that turned to years continued on his realized pattern only cemented itself.
Tessa only wore long sleeves on her real off days.
Why was that? Did she get colder on those days? No, no that doesn't make sense. Maybe it's just a comfort thing? Yeah, maybe she feels most comfortable with long sleeves on when she's in a bad mood, and saves that feeling for only then, which is why she doesn't wear them any other time. Yeah that makes sense… Right? Wait, does that make sense? Is that how comfort items work?
Eh didn't matter, either way that was the idea he went with. And that idea stuck with him for a while.
Well…
At least it did, up until Tessa’s 14th birthday.
He knows the night prior Tessa got grounded for failing an important test, yet another punishment Y/n couldn't take credit for. That's another thing that annoyed him, he could either not take credit for her punishment because it related to her personally, or because it all happened before he had the chance to take the bullet for her. One day he'll make things even, but until then he decided it was up to him to make sure this was the best birthday ever!
