Rolling the wet brush, a beige-tinted paint stuck to the oil-stained walls, the disgusting wet squelches of the substance something J couldn't stand for the life of her, but did her best to ignore the obnoxious noise. Running dry she rolled the brush back into the container, tapping it a few times along the edge, paint flinging everywhere except back into the tub. J just standing there, disappointed really. She had her jacket wrapped around her waist and hair tied into a tight bun to avoid the paint, which did nothing to assist. Body like a dalmatian with paint sprinkled dots splashed against her hair like a crappy star filled night. With a sigh she questioned how much life was actually worth it as she continued painting the barren bedroom.
All the while her coworker, Dave, was busy removing the carpeted floor. A third worker's name J hasn't heard yet removing all the appliances from the home to the warehouse where it was all stored till the next residence needed it. J would have much preferred the more laborious tasks, and not stuck with... This. It's just so messy. And don't get her started on the ceiling. Thankfully she had the advantage of being able to fly, making the roof easier to access, but still the occasional water droplet peeved her to hell and back. Now she's not one against showers, but after going from never taking one since entering the planet to it becoming almost mandatory immediately after work along with throwing her clothes in the wash on a daily basis, it can get a bit tedious. Not even James would have them washed this regular.
"Hey J, I'ma take my break. Think you got this for now?" Dave questioned, tucking the removed carpet into a cart to more easily relocate it, throwing in his tools into it as well. J glanced up to the ceiling for a moment, estimating how much longer it should be before finishing up the home. "I should be. I'll most likely be starting on the next apartment within the next few minutes." J hummed, a light nod coming from the worker as he stretched out his imaginary muscles with a content hum. "Alright, well I'll see you there then. If you run into any issues, you know where to find me. See ya J!" "Bye Dave." While J didn't have quite the same enthusiasm as her superior, he never seemed to mind. None of them did really. They just took her as is and rolled with it.
J appreciated that. They didn't want her to pretend to be obnoxious and act as if she cared about them. Also they weren't as crude as V was, nor stumbling around on the occasion like N had, so far superior coworkers already.
Setting the paint roller into the tray, J hammered the lid back onto the can with ease, yanking it up by the handle and taking the tray with, doing a once around around all the rooms, double checking each room had a perfectly new coat, with no overlay or abysmal bumps. Even if she hated the process, she was proud of the outcome. Walking out the home J silently made her way to the storage room, pulling out a key card with her picture on it and a QR code just below it, the backside showing a bunch of different alarm codenames for different types of casualties that could occur, the card given to her by Khan 3 days ago. Pressing the card to the scanner it hummed for just a moment before giving a beep of confirmation, door sliding open.
Walking along the wall J slipped the paint can into one of the empty slots, making sure the small 5 digit code matched the slots. Pausing for a moment J looked to two empty slots, eyes twitching in annoyance, ready to rip the hair out of that purple drone. Why does she keep stealing all the damn paints?!
After a quick cursing muted by the thick walls of the storage unit J regained her composure and pulled out her notebook. Flipping to the bookmarked page, using her pen to mark out the previous home, looking down to the next one in her schedule. Reading the home address and paints needed J quickly grabbed a basket, carefully setting in the 4 required cans along with a large plastic tarp, grabbing a fresh roller and quickly rinsing out the tray. Snatching a few more necessary brushes. With everything needed J did a quick once over her list, once sure she had everything she left off to the home address.
