It was a Sunday afternoon. After getting home from church and getting into more casual clothes Stuart was quite bored. His mom had gone back to the church to help with some easter preparation, he didn't have homeschooling or sunday school today, and he knew that mom was very strict about him going outside in the front yard without adult supervision. Despite his dad being home he knew that his dad was busy with work as usual. Stuart would sit in the kitchen at the dining table eating a sandwich and apple slices that his mom had given him for lunch before she left. It certainly wasn't what Stuart wanted to eat after accidentally being late to church on an empty stomach this morning but he rather not bother his dad for more food knowing his dad's work was very important.

After a couple minutes Stuart would get up from his chair and went to wash his dishes. Despite being only ten years old it was very easy for Stuart to put the dishes away after drying them off due to his abnormal height. After cleaning up from his lunch Stuart was still slightly hungry but he honestly wasn't wanting a piece of fruit, stale cookies from Christmas that lingered in the cookie jar, or the pretzels that never had enough salt on them on top of the fridge. Instead Stuart would go to the fridge and grab a glass of lemonade that mom had brought back from the service this morning, placing it on the dining table before going to his room to grab some stuff to entertain himself with.

While his son was in his room David would sit at his drawing desk in the living room. Sure it was slightly cramped in the corner next to the sofa but as long as he could work David didn't mind his working conditions. Despite feeling bad that his son was as usual doing his best to find anything to do while cooped up in the house, David was constantly on time crunches with his work. Despite some people thinking otherwise, despite him mostly working at home and drawing all day, David's job was quite stressful with its limited time. Though being able to see his product designs end up on shelves always made the job worth it. Despite it being many months away David was quite busy designing some brand new halloween products for the season as it would take a couple months for these simple prototype images to genuinely become real products. His mind was fully on designing his appealing ideas on the paper as he would temporarily block everything else out.

After grabbing everything he wanted from his room Stuart would make his way back to the dining table. He had grabbed some blank white paper, some very well loved crayons and colored pencils, his tape recorder, and a few tapes he usually hid from his mom knowing she wasn't too fond of what he chose to listen to when she wasn't around. Stuart would sit on the chair sipping some of his lemonade as he would set up his tape recorder. He would briefly glance at his small collection of tapes he would secretly buy when his mom would go to kmart in the local strip mall. He would eventually pick out Elton John from his little collection. He pops the tape into the recorder before quietly thinking about what to draw as he gently taps a colored pencil to the first song. Stuart didn't even seem to notice that he was quietly singing to the song as he would try to think of something interesting to draw. " It's a little bit funny. This feeling inside.... "

As Stuart quietly sang to himself that seemed to catch his dad's attention. Besides the times that David would go to church with his wife and son he never heard his son sing unless it was with the other kids in the choir or when he would sometimes sing to songs that his mom chose to play on the radio. He had never heard his son sing just by himself when he thinks that nobody else is listening. Despite his son every once in a while having an understandable voice crack he was...genuinely very good. David couldn't help but join in the quiet singing with his son. Despite never choosing to admit it to his wife he enjoyed Elton John's music and would even play it in the car whenever he was going to mail off his sketches to the company he works for. He would easily slip himself into the lyrics as he finished up a piece of his work.

Stuart would leave his train of thought as he heard his dad singing along with him. He would perk his head up having no idea that his dad even knew who Elton John was. Despite Stuart being slightly startled by his dad joining him he didn't want to ruin the flow and would continue to sing, letting himself be a little bit louder as the song got close to finishing . drawing was completely off the young boy's mind as he let the music block everything else out as he gently swayed his head to the song. He was completely in temporary bliss as he could finally fully show someone his talent without it just being for church or singing with his mom.

After another minute or so the song would finally finish off. Stuart was very quick to pause his tape before it would go to the next song glancing at his dad. " i-i didn't know you k-knew elton john d-dad! " David would slightly smile as he finished the last line of graphite on his sketch before letting himself get up the stretch. He would nod. " He's good aint he stu? " Stuart would simply nod with a big smile thrilled to know that at least his dad supported the music he liked. David would finally turn off his desk lamp to finish off his work for the day. He would walk over glancing at his son's other tapes as he poured himself his own glass of lemonade. He would slightly fix his glasses onto his nose as he studied the small pile. Elton John, Queen, Eric Clapton, Stevie Nicks, and David bowie. It wasn't much but it was certainly a collection to be proud of.

After looking at his son's collection he would sit with his son. " how'd you get all those tapes without your mom noticing stu? " Stuart would slightly look down at the table. He honestly wasn't too proud of going behind his mom's back to buy the tapes even if it was his own allowance that he was buying them with. David would notice his son's slightly ashamed face and would sigh gently side hugging his son. " I promise that I won't let your mom know. It can be our own father-son secret. " Stuart would glance up at his dad, deciding to confess his method. " when m-mom goes to k-k-mart to buy g-groceries , I pretend to go s-spend my allowance in the toy i-isle. I usually j-just find a cheap t-toy and use it to hide the t-tape in the bag ...."

David was certainly impressed by his son's skills to so easily get the music. Though he could still tell that Stuart wasn't too proud of lying to his mom. Despite his son loving the music he didn't like disobeying his mom. David sighed, giving his son a slightly tighter hug reassuring him that he's not in the wrong. " It's ok, stu. None of us are perfect kiddo. Even when I was a kid I did some stuff that your grandparents definitely wouldn't have approved of. " Stuart would glance up to his dad. " r-really? " David would sigh with a nod slightly reminiscing on his childhood. "Back when I was around your age I used to have a school friend. His name was kurin. He and I used to sneak out of our parent's homes to go biking around the town. Usually we would sneak off to the local drug store and would absolutely ruin our appetites for dinner with sweets and sodas. Are parents always thought we were doing homework or hanging out together in our rooms or the backyard. "

Stuart would quietly listen to his dad's words. Knowing his dad wasn't a perfect kid at his age either reassured Stuart a lot. He would give his dad a smile as he would hug him back. " t-thanks dad. "David would simply smile as he hugs his son back glad that his son was no longer mentally shaming himself over something normal for most kids his age. It was simply just a part of growing up even if parents didn't always see it that way.

After about half an hour Stuart's mom would finally make it back home. She would walk into the house bringing back some potato salad and leftover deviled eggs for the family to snack on. Before Rachel could call out for her son and husband she would notice the two. Both of them were quietly sitting at the dining table. Tiny dancer was playing on the tape recorder as the two would draw together drawing whatever came to their minds. Rachel despite not being fond of walking into hearing Elton John ... .could honestly care less about it. Instead her focus was just on her husband and son truly enjoying each other's company as they enjoy a hobby that both are passionate about. It would bring a smile to Rachel's face as she would quietly walk past the two to put the leftovers away while letting the two stay in their own worlds.
