[Angst/Fluff]
You lay in bed beside Dex, watching your girlfriend's eyes fixed on the ceiling, her body tense. It had been months since Dex had returned from her tour in Kabul, but the shadows of her experiences there lingered, haunting her. Tonight, those shadows seemed especially heavy.
Your heart ached with worry as you observed Dex, who used to be the vibrant soul of your relationship, now often reduced to silence and forced cheerfulness. The sadness Dex tried so hard to hide was evident, and it broke your heart. The feeling of helplessness gnawed at you, but you knew you had to do something.
"Hey," you whispered softly, rolling over to face Dex, your hand gently resting on your girlfriend's arm. "You okay?"
Dex turned her head, offering a weak smile that didn't reach her eyes. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just tired."
You felt a pang at the obvious lie. You could see the exhaustion etched in Dex's features, the weight of unspoken pain in her eyes. Without a word, you moved closer, wrapping your arms around Dex and pulling her into a tender embrace. You pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead, her lips lingering there as if willing the sadness away.
Dex stiffened for a moment, then slowly relaxed into the warmth of your arms. She buried her face in your neck, taking a shaky breath. You could feel the tension in her body, the silent struggle she was enduring.
"You don't have to talk if you're not ready," you murmured, your fingers tracing soothing circles on Dex's back. "But I'm here. I'm always here."
Tears welled up in Dex's eyes, and you felt your girlfriend's walls begin to crumble. Dex clung to you, the dam inside her breaking.
"It's just... everything feels so heavy," she whispered, her voice trembling. "I don't know how to make it stop. Kabul... it's always there, in my mind."
Your heart shattered at her words. You kissed her temple, holding her tighter. "We'll get through this together," you promised, your voice steady and filled with love. "One step at a time. You're not alone."
Dex nodded against you, her tears soaking into your shirt. But amidst the sorrow, you could sense a flicker of relief in her embrace. You knew that being there, holding her, was making a difference.
