On getting to the hospital, I hurried to the ob-gyn department. I checked all the consulting rooms, and finally one of the doctors said she just saw her. She was six weeks pregnant and wanted to terminate the pregnancy.
I had a mix of emotions course through me. Joy, anger, anxiety. I didn't know how to feel.
On the one hand I was mad at Ilay for spending a night with a stranger without protection, on the other hand I was happy about the pregnancy. I was finally going to become a grandfather. And I was anxious about what to do with the girl, and how to convince her to keep the pregnancy.
I left the consulting room to search for the girl. I found her at the exit with her feisty little friend. I tried talking to her, but her friend was being overprotective.
I pleaded with her for us to talk in the car. She agreed.
On getting inside the car, I told her. "I want to make a deal with you. I need you to give birth to this baby, and in return, I'd fulfill all your requests. I'd also pay you fifty million dollars as long as the child is born safely. I know you're a college student, and this pregnancy could bring your life to a standstill, but the child is innocent. And you could easily go back to your normal life with the money you'd be getting". I said to her.
"I....I need some time to think about this". She said.
"If you agree to my request, I have another condition". I told her.
"What's that?". She asked, as she blinked her beautiful brown eyes at me.
"If you agree to keep the baby, you'd have to move in with us. I'll personally make sure you and the baby are well cared for until you give birth". I said.
She nodded, and slowly slipped out of the car. I stared at her for a long minute after she got out of the car. I really hoped she'd agree to have the baby. I'd be indebted to her forever.
I drove slowly back to the office. Then I called Ilay.
"Leave whatever you're doing, and come to my office now!". I instructed, then hung up.
In a few minutes, he arrived.
"Father you wanted to see me. Is there something urgent?". He asked.
I slapped the sonogram on the table in front of him. He looked at it strangely.
"What is this father?". He asked.
I glared at him. "This my son, is the fruit of your loins". I said to him. He still looked confused. "Father you're confusing me. I can't understand when you talk like that". He said.
I sighed. "Ilay look at the name on that sonogram". I said. He picked it up and looked closely.
"Uh....it says 'River Hartford'. What's that got to do with me?". He asked.
My blood instantly boiled over. I slammed my hand on the table. "How could you be so unconcerned? That girl is carrying your child. Yes! That thing right there is a sonogram done today. She's six weeks pregnant, and you dare to ask what it's got to do with you?!". I yelled.
"What? She's pregnant? Wait. I've never met anyone named River. How could she be carrying my child?". He asked.
I took a deep breath, and pulled up her picture on my phone. "Does this ring a bell? You spent the night with her at your party. The pregnancy and your date of return align perfectly, so don't even try to deny it. I checked the hotel's CCTV footage too". I said to him.
He froze. "Dad. You knew? I really hoped she'd wouldn't be pregnant. Fuck! How did she get pregnant right after losing her virginity with me that night?". He said under his breath.
I threw a folder at him. "Did you know she was going to have an abortion? I stopped her in the nick of time". I said to him.
He remained silent.
"If she agrees to keep the baby, she'd move in with us. And you, young man would care for her and your child until she gives birth". I said to him.
He frowned. "Dad you don't know the kind of girl she is. She came onto me.....".
"I don't want to hear anything else. You may leave". I said, cutting him off. He walked out angrily.
