Dr. Gretchen smiled warmly. "Well, you're having triplets! And from what I can see, they're all healthy and developing perfectly."
Ilay's eyes were fixed on the ultrasound screen as if trying to process the information.
"Triplets?" I repeated, my voice barely above a whisper. "But...how is that possible? I thought I was only having one baby."
Dr. Gretchen chuckled. "Like I said, sometimes one fetus can be hiding behind the other, or in a different position, making it hard to detect in an early ultrasound. But don't worry, this is a wonderful surprise! You're going to be a great mom...of triplets!"
My eyes met Ilay's, and we both looked stunned. My mind was reeling with questions and emotions, but one thing was certain - my life was about to change in ways I never even imagined.
"Considering your endometrium is thin, you should avoid strenuous activities for now". She said. "When was the last time you two had sex?". She asked. That question caught me off guard.
Ilay immediately answered, "That was last night". My face heated up in embarrassment. Dr. Gretchen smiled warmly. "That's great".
Just then, the test results came in. She handed me a paper towel, and I wiped the gel from my belly. Ilay helped me down from the examination table, and we took a seat again with the doctor.
"So, River, what symptoms have you been experiencing?". She asked.
"For now, just the morning sickness, backpain and fatigue. Everything else is fine". I said.
She typed something on her computer again. "Your blood work came back good. You're perfectly fine and we do not have to worry about gestational diabetes or hypertension, but we did find traces of blood in your urine".
"I-Is that bad?". I asked, stuttering.
She looked at me. "Well, it is a thing to worry about, but your ultrasound showed everything is fine, the placenta is in normal position, and your babies are fine so there's nothing to worry about". I breath a sigh of relief.
She turned to Ilay. "Mr Stone. I'd suggest you go easy on her during intercourse. At least until the babies are stable. I'm not asking you to stop having sex. Just be gentle. Can you do that?". Ilay nodded as he scratched the back of his head.
"River, I suggest you get enough rest. Only move around when necessary. I'd schedule your next appointment in three weeks. If the blood spots are still present, then we'd have to hospitalize you". She said to me.
I know that I initially didn't want this baby, but I'd grown to love it. And now finding out I'd be having two babies, I want to do everything to protect them.
I nodded. "I understand Dr Gretchen. I'll be careful". I said.
"Alright. That's all for today. See you at the next appointment". She said. Ilay and I got up slowly and left the consulting room.
As we got to the car, Ilay helped me open the door. I took a seat. He stared at me for a few seconds, then he leaned down and kissed me. I blinked my eyes at him, confused. "Why did he suddenly do that?". I wondered.
"Don't worry. Our babies would be fine. I promise I'd be very gentle next time." He said.
"There won't be a next time". I said sternly. He looked surprised. "What? Why?". He asked.
I sighed. "You're engaged to marry someone else Ilay. I think you should be faithful to her. We made a mistake once, and now I'm pregnant. Let's end it there. Our relationship is based on a contract and the children in my womb. You don't have to take it further". I said.
He remained silent for a while. "There's a lot you don't know River, and a lot I also can't tell you just yet. But just know that I'm not trying to use you, and I'm definitely not the horrible person you think I am".
He immediately got in the car and drove off. He didn't say a word to me until we got home.
As we returned home, he gently held my hand as we made our way into the house. A sharp female voice sounded from the living room.
"Ilay, you're back!". The figure ran up to him and hugged him tightly, completely ignoring my presence. I slowly pulled my hand out of his grip.
She pecked his neck. "I've missed you". She said. Ilay gently pushed her away. "Why are you here, Bianca?".
The name echoed in my head. "Bianca? This woman was his fiancée?!".
"I haven't seen you in a whole month. Why can't I come here?". She asked.
I noticed Ilay's face darken. "You should've called if you wanted to meet up. There was no need to come over". He said.
"I called you a dozen times, but you didn't pick up, so I decided to give you a surprise". She glared at me. "Who's this?". She asked, as if just noticing me.
"She's my- ".
"I'm his friend!". I quickly replied, cutting Ilay off.
