I tried to find ways to bond with River. It seemed like she was shutting herself in. She didn't talk or laugh much around me. And that actually made me feel bad. I felt bad when I saw her so happy around other people.
When she was at home, she spent most of her time in her room. I decided to go to her room to have a talk with her after dinner.
I knocked gently on the door. "Can I come in?". I asked.
"Sure....". She responded. I twisted the door knob, and gently pushed open the door.
"Do you need something?". She asked as I walked in. She had her books scattered all over the bed. "You're studying. Am I disturbing?". I asked as I stared at her books on the bed.
Then something caught my eye. Her legs. Her beautiful legs. She wore an oversized black sweater, and her legs were exposed as she sat there. I found myself excited at the sight.
"How did I not notice she had such great legs?". I asked myself.
"Oh no. I'm done for tonight. Was about to put the books away". She said pulling me out of my daze. I took a seat on the bed.
"I....just need to ask a few questions. I won't be long". I said.
"The bartender said that your mother had paid him to drug me. Is that true?". I asked.
She lowered her head. "This question sounds funny coming from you. My parents died in a car crash four years ago. Didn't your father already tell you?". She asked as she held my gaze with hers.
"I– I.... ". I stared to say, but she cut me off.
"Do you think my mother would let me live in your house if she was alive?". She asked as tears welled up in her eyes.
I watched as her tears fell uncontrollably. I'd never seen her so hurt. "Ugh! I'm such a jerk" I thought. And I wonder why dad didn't let me know that she was an orphan. I pushed my thoughts aside. The most important thing right now was apologizing to her.
I patted her head gently. "I– I'm sorry, River. I had no idea. I'm sorry about your parents. May their souls rest in peace. Please....don't cry". I said, struggling to find the right words.
"You want to know the truth right? I'll tell you exactly everything that happened that day, so listen attentively". She said as she pushed my hand away.
"That day, my boyfriend had extra classes, so I went home without him. He had been down with a cold and I specially made him chicken soup. I went back to campus to give him the soup, then I caught him cheating on me in our special spot". She said, as she fought back her tears.
"Oh.... That must've been so– ".
"Shut up and let me finish". She said glaring at me.
"I broke up with him on the spot. I was shattered, and went to my friend Meagan and cried my heart out. In her attempts to make me feel better, she dragged me to that party even though I wasn't in the mood for it. Then I had some vodka, and you know what happened next. I'd never felt like that in my life. I guessed it was the vodka. I would never have let you touch me otherwise". She explained, her eyes brimming with tears.
She wiped her tears. "You rich people think everyone is after you. I don't have that sort of time". She said
"I– I will investigate this myself. I'm sorry about everything you've been through in such a short while. And to think I've been making things difficult for you. I'm sorry River". I said sincerely.
She ignored me and started gathering her books that were on the bed. I grabbed her hands. "Are you mad at me?". I asked, as I tried to stop her movements.
She rolled her eyes. "Aren't you done here? Please leave". She asked.
I let out a breath. "Our relationship started with a huge misunderstanding as the foundation. I'm trying to make amends and get closer to you for the sake of the kids. Isn't that obvious?"
She pushed me away. "No it's not. Leave me alone. Go out so I can sleep". She said.
I pulled her onto my lap, then I kissed her. She didn't refuse me, and even opened her mouth, letting me use my tongue.
"Are you still mad? Is this glaring enough?". I asked as I pulled away. She stared at me without saying anything. I couldn't help but want to get lost in her eyes.
"Then....I have to do more". I said as I attacked her lips again.
