I arrived at the hospital, panting frantically with River in my arms. My heart was ripping apart with each painful groan that escaped her lips.
"Help me! Please!" I yelled, as tears clouded my vision.
The nurses hurried over with a stretcher. They quickly wheeled her away, as I fell to my knees. Jace and the others hurried into the reception.
Gabriel pulled me to my feet. "Stay strong. You'd need to be there for her if something goes wrong." he told me. I hugged him tightly. "How could she fall? I had a premonition something would go wrong if she went upstairs alone."
He patted my back. "Accidents can happen. Just get a hold of yourself. You're crying like a baby."
Meaghan paced around the entrance to the OT, while chanting a prayer for River and the babies.
—
About an hour later, some of the nurses walked out with the babies on separate beds. They were only 7 months old, but they all survived the impact.
I kissed their bloody foreheads gently. "R-River? H-How is she?" I asked, dreading their reply.
"She's not yet stable. We'd be moving her to ICU," the surgeon said. "There was internal bleeding in the uterus. Thankfully, you got here in time."
I sighed, thanking God in my heart. The nurses headed to NICU with the babies.
"How did she get hurt so badly? She has a concussion and a cracked humerus." the surgeon said.
"She fell down the stairs." I told her. She stayed silent for a while. "That's a pretty bad fall."
"When can I see her?" I asked.
"You can see her tomorrow. For now, we need to find nutrition for the newborns since their mother is unconscious." she said.
I hugged her tight. "Thank you doctor. Thanks for saving them." I said. She chuckled. "Alright. You're welcome."
Meaghan went back home with me to grab some postpartum items for River.
We found Maria cleaning the blood on the staircase. I felt uneasy, but took a deep breath, and headed upstairs with Meaghan.
River already packed the hospital bag, so we didn't have much to do.
—
Dad hadn't come to the hospital with us, but I knew he was more anxious than anyone else. "Wait for me in the car," I told Meaghan. "I'll go see dad."
I walked into his study to find him sitting with his head in his hand. "Dad," I called out. He lifted his head, his eyes bloodshot.
"Why are you here? Where's River? And the babies?" he asked, grabbing my shoulders
"Relax, dad. They're fine," I told him. "River had the babies prematurely, but they're fine."
He heaved a sigh of relief. "I can't help but wonder how she could fall from a staircase she's well accustomed to."
"Forget all that, father. At least no one died. We should celebrate." I said. He nodded. "Go stay with her. But, change out of those clothes first."
I stared down at my clothes, realizing only then that I was covered in blood. I had worn grey dress pants and a white shirt to compliment Rivers' outfit. Now it was all ruined.
I hurried to my room, and changed out of the clothes, before heading to the car. We handed the items to the nurses, and waited outside.
Gabriel and Jace insisted on staying with me, and Meaghan had to return home because she had gotten an appendectomy just two days ago.
I sat awake all night in the waiting room.
"I never expected my kids would be born so early. Now I have less time to spend with River. Would she still leave? I thought I had more time, but I guess fate had other plans. We haven't even thought of names for the babies." I thought, as I stared up at the ceiling.
