I slowly walked into the house with my coat on my arm. It was 11:45pm. I was exhausted. I just wanted to sleep and forget everything, hoping I'd wake up tomorrow, and it'd all be a dream.

"You skipped dinner today. That's a first". Dad said as he looked down at me from upstairs. I lifted my head to meet his gaze.

"I'm sorry. I just wanted to be alone for a while". I said to him.

"Ilay. You'd be turning twenty-four in a few months. You shouldn't sulk when you face a problem. A real man looks his problem in the eye, and finds ways to tackle it". He said, holding my gaze.

"You can't take over my company if you hide from your mistakes and problems. I hope you'd think deeply about this and do the right thing. Accept the new responsibility that you now have. Every child needs their father, and my grandchild is no exception". He said.

After that he went straight to his room without waiting for my reply.

Maria, our chef walked up to me. "Sir, do you want me to heat up dinner for you?". She asked.

I shook my head slightly. "No Maria. I'm not hungry". I said to her.

"Alright sir. Have a good night". She said. She turned and left after that.

I went up to my room. I felt cold after sitting by the lake for so long, so I took a hot bath. After my bath, I laid on my bed, unable to fall asleep.

I thought about what dad had said.

"Perhaps I could fulfill my duties to my child and this 'River' while also drawing the line in our relationship". I thought.

I felt at ease after making up my mind to accept the baby. I sank into the warmth of the mattress, and slowly drifted off to sleep after that.

I didn't sleep for as long as I wanted though. I was up at 6:00am. Mostly because I got really hungry.

I walked into the kitchen for a glass of water. Maria was there making pancakes.

"Morning sir. You're up early. I thought you'd sleep in today". She said.

"Morning Maria. I just came down for some water". I said as I opened the fridge and took out a bottle of water.

"Okay. You didn't eat anything last night. I made some pancakes - why don't you have some?". She offered.

I instantly agreed. The pancakes smelled exceptionally good today. Perhaps because I was hungry.

I grabbed a bowl of mixed fruits from the kitchen island and sat at the dinning table. I ate the fruits while waiting for Maria to serve the pancakes.

Soon, dad came downstairs. He was ready for work. He sat at the dinning table.

"Morning dad". I said, as we made eye contact.

"Morning Ilay. Have you....made a decision yet?". He asked.

I nodded.  "Yes I have".

Maria was still serving the pancakes, and I didn't want to say anything to her hearing.

"I've decided to put up with her. She's carrying my child after all. I think I can stand her for eight months. The baby is the most important". I said to dad after Maria had returned to the kitchen.

"That's good. I knew you'd make the right decision. Now all we have to do is wait for her to make her own decision". Dad said.

"There's no way she'd refuse the offer. She had me drugged just for this purpose. And dad thinks she's a pure girl. I'm certain she's jumping in her bedroom right now. Only stalling time so she doesn't seem greedy". I thought to myself.

Dad was done eating, and gently wiped his mouth. "Are you coming to the company today?". He asked me, as he grabbed his suit from the chair.

"Yes dad. I'd be there a bit later". I said.

Just then his phone rang. He picked up.

"Okay. That's perfect. I knew you were a smart child. Alright. I'll meet you at a café this afternoon. I'll text you the place". He said to the person on the phone.

I frowned. I wanted to know who it was.

"That was River. She accepted our offer. She'd give birth to the baby". Dad said. It was like he knew the question I was about to ask him.

"I knew it! There's no way she'd say 'no' to such an offer". I thought.

"Okay. There's a small project I want you to handle. We'll talk about it when you come to the company". He said as he walked out the door.

I really wanted to come face to face with this girl called River. We had a lot to talk about.
