The shoes squeaked against the ground as you focused intently on the ball in front of you, suddenly jumping into the air—
A thunderous sound erupted as the volleyball seemed to gain extra speed, shooting toward the high wall opposite the net.
The volleyball mercilessly broke through Tendou's defense, slipping past his hand and landing heavily on the court behind him.
Pretending to shake off the impact, he let out a dramatic roar of pain, though only Ushijima and Goshiki were fooled, looking on with concern.
"If Wakatoshi-kun is a cannon, then he is like dynamite! He just blew through the wall," He declared, one hand on his hip, glaring playfully at you on the other side.
"The ball can be stopped, but explosives? How am I supposed to stop that?"
Everyone was used to his quirky metaphors. Only you looked slightly puzzled at being called "explosives." You frowned in confusion and gestured to yourself with your thumb.
"Why explosives?" you asked.
"Huh?"
Shirabu around you didn't expect you to react and made a nasal sound in surprise.
Tendou extended a finger and said firmly, "Ah, because your ball is like a powder barrel that's been ignited—both terrifying and powerful."
"Normally, people like Wakatoshi-kun focus all their strength on the volleyball itself, resulting in a smash like a 'cannon.' But you are different." He shook his finger and held his head high, explaining:
"Your volleyball is super tricky! It's like it contains explosives that can burst out at any moment. It might seem like an ordinary barrel when it's not ignited, so you can never guess! Besides, the impact point is scattered like dynamite, making it incredibly unpredictable! It's like saying, 'You want to catch my ball? You'll end up flat on the ground!'"
The people around laughed at his exaggerated imitation of you, finding it amusing, while you couldn't recall ever making such an expression.
- If you looked in the mirror more often, some of your social issues might be resolved.
But now you blinked, tilted your head, and the clump of hair on top of your head swayed.
Just now... what's all this about explosives and bombs... I don't get it!
...Well, whatever. It's just a nickname. Besides, I've been called worse by Hinata.
"Uh-huh—?" Tendou on the other side of the net suddenly narrowed his eyes, and Ushijima next to him looked at him puzzled. He suddenly jumped, grabbed the net in front of you, and pressed his face against it.
"Huh? Why are you so interested in that nickname? Don't tell me... Have people called you that before?"
You raised an eyebrow and nonchalantly jogged in place, your eyes fixed on the ball in action as Ohira smashed it hard to the opposite side. You replied indifferently:
"It's nothing. It was just a comment made by someone from Karasuno."
"Huh—?! Karasuno? Do you know students from other schools?! I thought you were the type who wouldn't have friends even if you tried!" He shouted exaggeratedly, jumping up under the coach's "serious" gaze and hitting the ball back across the court.
"What a surprise!" Goshiki whispered in shock.
From then on, you were relentlessly pestered by Tendou, both during training and breaks, trying to get to know your "friend" from Karasuno.
