Elizabeth didn't wake up when the cannon was fired. No, sadly the young girl had now grown accustomed to the sound.
She only woke when she smelled the combination of burnt and sulphur. A combination that you wouldn't want to feel in the arena. But never the less she smelled it, and when she saw the black smoke slowly finding its way into the cave, she panicked.

She grabbed the first thing she could get her hands on, a knife and a handful of Witch berries, wich realy didn't make enny seens, but you don't have to make seens when you're panicking and all, it wasn't like she had much time to think.

So she put the berries in one pocket and the knife in the other. She notest that she apparently already had a knife on her, but it wasn't something she was going to stop and reflect on, nothing worth wasting precious time on.

She quickly crawled out of the cave and had to catch her breath when she saw it, half the meadow was already in flames and the fire quickly spread throughout the dry grass. There was nothing else she could do but run. Hopefully she would be able to seek refuge on another island.
It wasn't as if there were that many tributes left to watch out for.

But when she reached the shore, she was struck by a new sight, a terrible sight.

All the islands were on fire, all but the one in the middle, the one with the Cornucopiat. Those assholes of game makers would force the remaining tributes into a bloodbath, all three of them. But if it was a bloodbath they wanted, it was one they were going to get. With a slightly less injured leg, Elizabeth threw herself into the water and swam. She was almost certain that she no longer needed to fear the shark, for the capital could not risk losing such an entertaining and intresting scen to a shark.

She gasped for air as she reached the shore, but didn't let that stop her. Just like the night before, she rushed through the forest and when she reached the Cornucopiat, she stopped under the cover of the trees and shadows, waiting just like the day before. The day she killed Alesandra.

But she couldn't let herself think about it, not now. On further reflection, she realized that she wasn't thinking at all.

Now she was here, what would she do then, wait an eternity fore someone to finding her? Then what? Suffer a painful death, hardly!

She put her hand into one of the pocket and was met first by the knife, then her target, a berry. She knew what they could do, it could kill her, but only one, then it would take time, first paralysis, then death, but if her would-to-be killers wanted to make her suffer, she would take that pleasure away from them.

Whit no doubt she swallowed the berry and walked towards the Cornucopiat, either she would die today, or, no she would probably die today, but not without a fight.

"Hello! Anyone there?"
No reaction.
"If I, the 13-year-old, was first, it's quite embarrassing for the rest of you!"
Still no reaction, not a single sound. So she spunn around before screaming out.
"If you want me come get me!!"

Then she jumped, at a scream that resembled a war cry, a boy came running towards her with the knife in full swing. So when he got a tiny bit closer, she saw who it was. It was none other than Cota, District Two's male tribute, Alesandra's ally, and if she remembered correctly he had scored an 11.

Her face turned pale before she started running. Immediately she had regretted her act, why why had she done that!

But then she came up with something, she too had scored an 11. Quickly she spun around, pulled a knife out of one pocket and threw, and she fucking missed! Shit, now she was dead. A dead man walking, but when she was about to start running again, she couldn't. The barry she had taken had done exactly what they were supposed to and she could no longer feel her legs.

The only problem was that she could no longer run, so in a couple of seconds Cota had tackled her and was straddling her on the ground.
"You killed Alesandra!!"
He had a knife against her throat so she didn't dare answer.
"Facking killed her!! But now I'm going to kill you!!"

He swung the knife in the air as if he was going to put it in her throat and Elizabeth squeezed her eyes shut in anticipation of the pain.
But it never came.
Slowly, slowly, she opened her eyes and was greeted by Cota's smiling face.

"What, you thought you'd get away that easily?!! No, you're going to feel as much pain as Alesandra did!"
She couldn't answer, just opened and closed her mouth like a fish, before he finally, drilled the knife into one of her thighs. Then she screamed. The pain was dulled after the berry, but it still hurt.

"Pl-please."
Was all she could muster, but Cota just smiled. He stabbed her twice more in the same leg before switching. She would die from the berry or blood loss before he was done, but then she felt something.

She still had feeling in her left hand, a hand that Cota completely ignored. So when she slowly reached into her pocket, he was too busy mutilating her body to notice. At first she felt the knife, but once again that was not the target.

She grabbed probably ten, maybe more berries and closed her hand around them. She waited for the right moment, and when Cota leaned into her to whisper something, it had come.

"Any last words?"
"Yes?"
"What?"
But before she said anything, she shoved the berries into his mouth, but he just smiled.

"Seriously? I was actually a little hungry, thanks!"
Now he was so close that Elizabeth could feel his breath against her face, but when she smiled too, he pulled away.

"Not just berries."
She whispered, smile widening.
"And you killed her, not me!!"

He had not been expecting her sudden struggle for her life, much less had he expected that his body no longer obeyed him.

So when Elizabeth pushed him off her and then almost threw herself at him using only her arms, his eyes said it all.
"Please please!!! Don't kill me I'll do whatever!!"
But it was too late for prayers, she had readyed her knife and now her only target was his chest.

She let the edge pierce his clothes and skin and as he screamed out she screamed words herself, words she would later never forget.
"STOP TRYING TO FACKING KILL ME!!!"

She stabbed him again and again, barely even reacting when the cannon was fired, just kept stabing.

After all, it was what saved her life, maybe she was terrified that the pale body beneath her would attack her if she stopped. But just in time for the voice from before to fill the arena again, she rolled off him.

Her body was battered, no longer obaying her, her mind was still struggling, but even that would soon give up.
All she could hear before the world disappeared into the darkness behind her eyelids was.

"Ladies and gentlemen the winner of the 66 hunger games, Elizabeth Whitmore!!!"

And then everything got so dark.
Dark and quiet, and by this time she welcomed it.
