❥ EVERETT'S POV
Everett's nostrils flare as his eyes flutter open.
Exhaustion continues to weigh his body down, and it's a struggle to move a limb. His anxiety spikes a little, thinking he still has Russell's drugs pumping in his system until he blinks several times, allowing the bright hospital room to fully come into focus.
Holy shit, I'm not dead?!
The steady beep of the heart monitor is a good sign he's safe and still in the land of the living. That, along with the soreness throbbing in his abdomen. But his health status quickly falls to the bottom of his list of worries now that his brain is back online.
The more important question is—Where is Knox?
"Everett?"
Dad?
Two familiar figures move in closer by his bedside. It's his father, Gary, and his stepmother, Sarah. Their faces brighten as his eyes meet theirs.
"Oh, thank God, he's awake!" Sarah exclaims with watery eyes, gripping Gary's arm. "I'll go get the nurse and she can call for the doctor. Keep him up and talking!" She scurries out of the room before his father can protest.
"How are you feeling, son? Any pain anywhere? Do you need more medicine?" His father asks.
Everett opens his mouth, trying to speak, but his parched throat produces only a dry rasp. Gary reaches for a cup of water on the side table and carefully brings it to Everett's lips. The cool liquid immediately helps to soothe his raw throat as he takes a few sips.
"Where is he?" Everett croaks out.
"Who, son?" Gary's brow furrows in confusion.
"Knox," Everett clarifies, his body gaining strength off the man's name. "He's probably worried sick. I need to see him..."
"No. That's never going to happen." Gary's expression darkens in an instant, and just that one look is enough to tell Everett that Knox is on his father's shit list. "I forbid you from ever seeing that man again."
The words land like a punch to Everett's gut. He struggles pathetically to push himself upright in bed, his muscles protesting weakly. His father reaches out to assist, but Everett's patience snaps like an overstretched rubber band.
"What is wrong with you? How could you say something like that?" Ignoring the pain, Everett continues to push himself up in bed. "Knox and his brothers saved me! Despite whatever you may be thinking, he's a good man."
"He'll be a dead man if he shows his face around here again."
"No. Y-You can't mean that..." Tears prick at his eyes as his frustration grows. He tries and fails to throw the sheets off him to get out of bed. "I need to see him, Dad. Does he even know I'm alive? He..."
