Cont'd From The Previous Chapter

Knox darts between the laughing children, his eyes locked on the energetic form of one of the twins.

The little rascal is a pint-sized whirlwind that's all but impossible to catch. Just as Knox reaches out, the ringing of his cell phone cuts through the giggles and shrieks of the backyard party. He pulls up short, whipping the device from his pocket and checking the Caller ID before answering.

"What's up, Red?" he says, breathless from the chase.

"I'm turning down your street—" Josie's voice crackles through the speaker before breaking off. "Gabe, no! Stop throwing that." There's a muttered curse, then a plea. "Sorry about that, Knox. Can you come help me with the bags?"

Before Knox can agree, the line goes dead.

Chuckling, he pockets his phone and jogs over to Everett, who is leaning against a tree watching the kids play. "I'll be right back. Josie needs an extra hand."

"Want me to come with you? Alissa and Michael can keep an eye on the kids," Everett asks.

Knox shakes his head and kisses him briefly. "I got it."

Knox makes it to the front yard in time to see Josie's car pulling into the driveway. She hauls herself out with a low groan, one hand braced on her very pregnant belly as she shoots Knox an exhausted look.

"Please tell me there's food ready somewhere," she says. "I could legit eat half of this house right now."

Knox chuckles. "There's some coming off the grill if you want it hot and fresh. Help yourself."

As he approaches the back door to grab armfuls of gifts, Gavin emerges from the other side of the car.

Gavin reaches into the backseat to unbuckle his son, Gabriel, who immediately bursts from the confines of his car seat like a force of nature. His chubby legs race toward the backyard after his mother, tiny hands clutching some toy that looks like it's seen better days.

"I thought this biker shit would take me out one day, but now I'm convinced it'll be Gabriel instead," Gavin says with a shake of his head while helping Knox with the gifts. "That boy ain't even a teenager yet and he's already given me a million gray hairs."

"Just wait until baby girl gets here. That shit is gonna multiply like a motherfucker," Knox teases, balancing the presents in his arms as they head inside the house. "God bless whoever she falls in love with."

"My trigger finger is already itching," Gavin laughs.

There'd been a time when Knox had thought he'd never hear that laugh again in person.

After that mess with Russell, Gavin's future, along with a few other members from the club, remained uncertain. There'd been endless meetings with Elizabeth, the club's lawyer, and endless strategizing late into the night to mount the best possible defense.
