KNOX'S POV

Knox's mind is a million miles away as he sits beside Finn's hospital bed doomscrolling on his phone.

He can't bring himself to look at his brother for more than a few seconds. It's too fucking painful seeing Finn lying there motionless with tubes snaking out of his broken body. Each steady beep from the heart monitor is a constant reminder that this is all Knox's fault.

That things could've ended differently that night if only he had reacted quicker to his instincts.

If Josie were here, she'd tell him to stop beating himself up over the past. She'd tell him Finn doesn't blame him for anything, and that he's stressing over nothing. If Everett were here, he'd probably agree.

Everett.

A sharp pain pierces Knox's chest and forces him to stand just as the door opens.

Rachel, Finn's ol' lady, walks in with one hand resting on her growing belly. Knox hadn't known how deeply she and Finn were connected until he met her here at the hospital for the first time and spotted the giant diamond ring on her left hand. He knew of the pregnancy but had no idea Finn had proposed.

It made this situation ten times more painful.

"The cops came around again asking if he woke up yet." Her voice is tinged with fatigue as she settles into a chair beside the bed. "It's harassment at this point. I just wish they'd leave us the hell alone."

Knox shoves his phone into his pocket and meets her gaze. "I know it's hard, but you can't let the bastards get under your skin. Awake or not, they can't get anything out of Finn without our lawyer present."

His words are meant to be comforting, but they're sprinkled with unspoken fear.

What if Finn never wakes up? What if Gavin and the other members rot in jail? What if Knox never sees Everett again—

"Thanks," Rachel says. "Thanks for being here and checking on us and bringing me things. It...it really means a lot." She takes a shaky breath. "When I first found out what Finn did for a living, I threatened to cut him out of the baby's life unless he left that shit alone."

Knox chuckles. "Yeah, he told me."

"I'm not surprised." She smiles. "But I finally realized how much you all mean to him. How the club is his family. It was wrong of me to give that ultimatum. I already apologized to Finn, but I wanted to say sorry to you, too. He always speaks so highly of you, Knox."

A knot forms in Knox's throat. He can only nod and force a faint smile before he has to look away.

"Need to stretch my legs. I'll be back." He doesn't wait for a response before striding out of the room.

His feet move on autopilot, carrying him through the noisy hallways until he emerges through the main doors of the hospital. The fresh air does little to ease the tightness in his chest.
