Niles's Pov

I was sitting in my 7th-grade classroom, staring out the window as my teacher droned on about fractions. My mind was elsewhere, thinking about my girlfriend y/n and her cheerleading tryouts. We had been together for a year now, and I was beyond proud of her for giving it a shot.

As soon as the bell rang, signaling the end of school, I rushed out of the classroom to find y/n. We exchanged quick hugs and whispered good lucks before she headed off to her tryouts. I knew that my older brother Noah would probably pick her up from practice later, but I wanted to make sure she knew I was thinking of her too.

After school, I ran to my basketball practice. Our coach was putting us through a tough workout, but I was determined to make a good impression. As we finished up and headed back to our locker room, I thought about y/n again. I wished her luck silently, hoping she would do amazing today.

When practice ended, Noah and Nelson were waiting for me outside the gym. "Hey, little bro! You killed it out there!" Noah said with a grin. I nodded, feeling a sense of accomplishment.

But my mind kept drifting back to y/n. How was she doing? Was she nervous? Was she making it?

That night, when we got home, my parents asked us about our day. I told them about my practice and y/n's tryouts. My mom gave me a warm smile and said she was sending positive vibes her way.

The next morning, y/n didn't seem herself at school. She was quiet and distant during class, and even missed recess to sit alone in the library. When we met up at lunchtime, she looked upset and stressed.

"Hey, what's wrong?" I asked her gently.

She shrugged. "I didn't make it," she whispered. "I didn't make the cheer team."

My heart sank for her. I could see the disappointment in her eyes.

We parted ways after lunch, but I couldn't shake off the feeling of sadness that lingered inside me. That afternoon, I convinced my parents to take me to the flower shop downtown.

"Mom, can we please get some flowers for y/n?" I asked eagerly.

My mom smiled and nodded. "Of course, sweetie! What kind do you have in mind?"

I scanned the aisles quickly before settling on a bouquet of eye-catching purple flowers - y/n's favorite color (or whatever you want it to be)! We also picked out a card with a sweet message inside.

On Saturday morning, Noah and Nelson tagged along with me to deliver the surprise to y/n's house. When we arrived, her mom answered the door with tears in her eyes.

"Oh, Niles! You shouldn't have done this," she said softly.

I handed y/n the flowers and card, trying to hide my own smile. Y/n's eyes widened as she read the message inside: "You're amazing no matter what you do!"

As she hugged me tightly and thanked us all for being so kind, I realized that sometimes it's not about getting what you want - it's about showing you care.
