The faint buzzing from her phone had woken her up, the time read 4:32 in the morning. Cameron doesn't think twice as she slowly sits up, careful to not wake Hailey up as she's passed out on the other side of her bed, where Paige usually is. But Paige isn't here, she's in Europe with the team. Cameron didn't get the chance to go, which was okay. For as fun as the trip looked, she had a lot more fun getting back into the swing of things with basketball and practicing with her friends for most of the summer. Geno had asked her if she wanted to come once summer session was over. When she says she didn't get the chance to go, she genuinely didn't want to because her and Paige weren't on talking terms. Which was fine. Cameron deserved it this time. After what she put Paige through for the last 3 years, it was only fair.

They promised each other their personal shit would never cross the boundary of their professional lives, dating or not, but Cameron decided that she couldn't go. If she had to share a hotel room with Paige or Azzi, or even Nika for the trip— she just couldn't. She genuinely needed a break. Nika was completely innocent, she actually had nothing to do with what happened. Not on Cameron and Paige's end, at least. Cameron just knew that Nika wouldn't talk to her out of pure loyalty, which was also fine.

She made up some dumb excuse as to how she planned to be in Germany to get some playing time in before the school year started since she was officially a UConn Husky basketball player now. That wasn't a lie, but nor was it completely true.

Cameron was worried they weren't going to come back from that this time, though. She was worried that all of their progress, all their talks, their kisses, everything was over within the blink of an eye due to one shitty night in June. That night wasn't even her fault — at least, not completely. It was her brother and his big fucking mouth.

She blinks the sleep away from her eyes, reaching to her desk once more to put on her glasses. Her brain finally registers what's in front of her. She hasn't opened the texts yet, Paige probably thinks she's asleep.

She goes to open the texts, but Hailey stirs in her sleep, causing Cameron to stop for a moment. She's really thankful Hailey is here with her, they'd spent most of— if not all of the summer together. Hailey had been her rock throughout the last few years, especially when Paige wasn't around. Cameron feels a little guilty, because Hailey has just always been there. Hailey was always real with her, she was always a shoulder Cameron had when she needed one the most, and she made Cameron a better basketball player, too. Oftentimes, Cameron likes to think she's just a step or two below Paige. That's not even a theory, because it's the truth. Cameron owes Hailey Van Lith her life and then some.
