Opal's pov
AFTER SUPPER I WENT INTO the palace's library. I had made sure to eat all of my food just like Ambrose told me to before I went anywhere.
I tugged at my silky pajamas as I browsed across books. I wasn't the best at reading, usually, it took me a long time to make out a paragraph.
My education stopped in grade four or three, I didn't remember much from that time. I was too busy forming an ice skating career that I was pulled out of school and was 'homeschooled'. It was a lie, after that, I didn't learn anything anymore.
It was all about skating and shaping my body into its healthiest state. Doing that as a child made me more mature than other kids my age, they thought I was cool and often asked their parents for play dates or to hang out at the parks.
Bell had none of that, she cut any friends I could've had from my life out. I was depressed, I felt it. But when she introduced me to my poison addiction all the sadness seemed to go away.
I thought of the kids who wanted to be my friends as the coolest people ever. They were able to go to school and have family dinners. They could have ice cream and all types of sweet treats that I couldn't.
I've never been more envious of seeing children playing at the park when I was younger. The skating ring took up all of my life, and now that it didn't. I wanted to learn how to read better so Florian and Ambrose wouldn't think I was dumb.
A glowing book caught my attention, I grabbed one of the candle holders that were all across the library and picked it up carefully so the lit candle wouldn't go out. I walked towards the glowing book, picking it up.
The cover had a golden hue to it. Before I could open the book it opened itself, floating by itself as well. I brought my hand over my mouth, shocked.
The pages flipped simultaneously and stopped. The page to the right glowed and the page to the left began to fade out, the words disappeared as if they weren't even there to begin with.
I squinted my eyes in confusion.
I began to read the glowing page.
