"Your counselor reached out to me and Ma, said that Dartmouth is interested in you. You know that's an Ivy league school?" My father said as he drove, I was in the passenger seat
I shrugged in return. "I wanna go to a HBCU, we been talked about this."
"So you telling me you bust your ass in school five days out the week to go to some school full of niggas and diseases?"
"Daddy, is me being the next diversity scholarship any better? Be serious." I scoffed, he was talking nonsense
He looked at me like I was dumb, then looked right back at the road. "You ain't come this far for you to think that you only getting a scholarship because of your skin color." He shook his head
"I don't think that it's only because of my skin color but it probably has something to do with it."
"Yuri, your ass get all A's, damn near perfect test scores, do track, cheerleading, gymnastics, help around the school, great behavior wise. and just got an internship. Being a nigga ain't got shit to do wit' an Ivy league school being interested in you." He went on
Listening to him made me go quiet because he was right, he definitely clocked my tea
"Okay but I still don't want to go to an Ivy league. I want the experience-" I started, and he cut me off
"What you want ain't important right now, we gon look into the school."
My dad was like a brick that won't budge when he made up his mind, so it was no point in going back and forth at the moment
After giving him a look, I rolled my eyes and started to check Canvas to see what grade I got on my test. I received a 91% on my science exam, but I was to receive extra credit from the Blooket games we played afterwards
Maybe I should look into higher schools academically, but there's also nothing wrong with going to an HBCU, plus it's culturally better
"Kaiser was talking to me about some roadtrip." He spoke, and I shrugged
"Is you going?" He looked at me
"He mentioned it, but I had to ask you guys first."
"Kaiser planned the whole thing and checked wit' us, so you can go." He nodded
"Okay."
We were headed to drop off my work permit to the law firm I was about to start interning at, that was all we needed to do, then they would talk to me about my schedule
