Cameron
The guys have all fallen asleep by now. And here I lay staring at the top bunk not being able to fall asleep. Aaron and Jake got in a fight today. With the girl I saw with honey-brown hair. I put on my black converse high tops, and walk out the door.
There's light illuminating from behind a tree. I walk over there. It's the same girl writing in a notebook with a flashlight.
"Hey." I say.
She brings the notebook close to her chest. "Hi."
What do I say to a girl? "Heard you got in a fight with my friends."
Her face goes red. "Uh. Yeah. I didn't mean to. Really. It was an accident."
"It's fine. They're okay. You're okay. I think."
"Yeah. I'm okay."
I sit down next to her. "Um. I've never actually talked to a girl before, so--"
"So you're nervous?" She interrupts.
"Um. Yeah. Something like that."
"You shouldn't be nervous around me. I'm usually comfortable to be around."
"Oh really?" I say too sarcastically.
"Yes. Really. Unless you pick a fight with me, you'll be fine." She laughs a little still holding the notebook to her chest. "I'm Taylor."
Taylor, I love that name. "I'm Cameron." She smiles at my name.
"You know what's funny?" She says after staring at my eyes for a while. "Both our names can either be boy or girl names."
I think about that for a second. "Oh. Gosh. You're right." We both laugh.
She stares at the ground for a couple of seconds. "I don't think boys and girls are allowed to hang out with each other here at camp." Does she not want to hang out with me?
"That's stupid." I say.
"I know right. What if they're brother and sister? Can they hang out then?"
I laugh a little.
"I should go back in. The girls are going to notice I'm gone." She says. I smile a little.
She gets up and leaves. I sit there for a while. She left her pen. I'm stand up. I'm about to yell for her, but she's out of sight. At least now I can have an excuse to see her at breakfast tomorrow.
I go back into my cabin room and lay back down.
"Where ya been?" Jake says from above me.
"What?" I whisper back.
"I heard you get up."
"Just go back to sleep, J."
I roll over and try to get to sleep clutching the pen she forgot.
"Cameron. Wake up Camcam." Aaron says nudging my back.
I roll over still holding the pen.
"What's this?" Aaron says.
"It's Taylor Swift's." I say obviously still delusional from sleep.
Aaron looks at me with a strange look on his face. "Okay, Cameron dream all you want about Taylor Swift, but man, she's never gonna date you."
"What?" I'm awake now. "What are you talking about Taylor Swift?"
"Bro, you've been dreaming about Taylor Swift."
Wrong. I've been dreaming about Taylor. Her hair is so pretty. I won't let the boys know that just yet.
I get up and head to the cafeteria with the boys. They have eggs, and they're scooping them with ice cream scoops. I take a seat next to Jake. I look around the cafeteria trying to find Taylor. Her pen is in my pocket. I've spotted her taking a seat by herself.
I wait a few minutes before getting up. "Be right back." I say patting Jake on the back.
I walk over to Taylor, and lean on the table a bit. Her face lights up when she sees me.
"Hi." She says.
"Hey," I say. She puts her fork down to talk to me. Her eyes are hazel. So pretty. "Um. Yeah. You left your pen at the tree last night." I say in a hushed voice so no one will hear me. I hand it to her.
"Oh thank you thank you thank you!" She says. "I've been going crazy wondering where it went." She stands up and gives me a hug. "Not being able to write for a whole night, then thinking one of my roommates has it is the worst thing ever."
She gasps.
"Oh gosh. Boys and girls aren't allowed to be seen by each other. It was right there in the rules." She shakes her head and sits down. "Great, now I'm going to be in even more trouble then I already am."
"It's alright. I'll say it was my fault." She smiles at me. "See you at the lake at hang time?" I say walking away. She nods her head.
Jake and Aaron and Ryan didn't pay any attention to the fact that I just hugged a really super cute girl. Since she likes to write so much I wonder if she likes to read. I wonder what books she's read. I sit back down next to Jake who's munching on a piece of chewy bacon.
"What am I supposed to say to a girl?" I say.
"Seriously?" Aaron says excitedly. I nod my head slowly. "Bro, we've been waiting for you to say that."
"Listen, Cameron, whoever this girl is make sure she's a good kisser." Jake says.
"We're not doing any kissing, okay?" I say. "Maybe I shouldn't have gone to you guys if this is what you talk about. Besides, we're not even supposed to be hanging out with each other. Boys hanging out with girls here is against the rules."
"Be a rule breaker." Aaron whispers.
"No. Don't. That would be bad." Ryan says.
"Thank you, Ryan, for being on my side with things." Ryan smiles a little.
"Ryan, bro, loosen up a bit, we're at camp, not at a speech tournament, go crazy if you have to, no one will get mad at you." Aaron says.
"Yeah, but my mom might find out." Ryan says.
"What's worse? Your mom finding out, or you never getting to do fun stuff?" Aaron says.
"Oh." Is all Ryan says. I'm not sure if something clicked in his brain, or if he just wants this discussion to be over with.
We start to head back to the cabin to grab a few things before the day officially starts. "Okay, see you guys at the lake at hang time." I say.
"See ya then, bro." Aaron says with a nod.
Then I run off to Track A.
