CHAPTER THIRTY ONE

"This place is way too fancy!" Jenna gaped up at the mansion as we walked up the driveway. The outside was lit up with fairy lights and the residents of Mystic Falls crowded the entrance, eager to get inside.

"Nothing is too fancy for the Mikaelsons." I told my aunt, locking my arm with hers as we walked through the double doors and into the ballroom.

I had been in the ballroom just yesterday but it had changed so vibrantly in such a short space of time. Lights sparkled from the banisters and people buzzed around the space, giving it a lively atmosphere. Musicians sat in the corner, playing a beautiful and classy melody. I wasn't overly fond of the violin but there was no doubting the skill of its wielder.

"Jenna! Emilia!" A voice greeted us and we turned to see Mayor Lockwood smiling at us, a glass of champagne in her hand.

"Carol, it's been so long since I've seen you!" Jenna greeted her with a smile, "How have you been?"

"I have been very well, Jenna, thank you for asking." Carol smiled before directing her attention to me, "Emilia, people have been talking nonstop about your performance in a ballet during the summer! You're practically a celebrity in this town now!"

I smiled gracefully at her words and bowed my head in thanks, "It was such an incredible experience; I was so lucky to be a part of it."

"Well, next time you're the star of a show, remember to send the town council some tickets, we'd love to see how one of our own has flourished." Carol said before excusing herself to talk to a group of gossiping women.

"Wow, a celebrity!" Jenna teased, elbowing me playfully.

"Shut up, Jenna, I'm hardly famous." I flushed, tipping my head down.

"You could be." My aunt shrugged, "You have a real talent, Emilia. It is wasted on teaching children in Mystic Falls."

"I love that job!" I said, offended on behalf of Lauren and the other kids.

"All I'm saying is that you have many more years of performing left in you before you settle down and become a teacher." Jenna told me as a few of our neighbors approached us. I smiled politely at them as Jenna chatted away to them but my eyes caught on something else.

My twin walked through the doors wearing a beautiful black dress. Her gaze met mine and she gave me a quick wave, which I returned. Elena startled when Stefan approached her, quickly followed by Damon. The younger Salvatore held out his arm, which Elena took. A few seconds passed before Damon held out his arm, which Elena grabbed as well. I tilted my head in interest as she walked into the ballroom with a brother on each arm.

I felt a tap on my shoulder and turned to find Rebekah looking down at me. She wore a deep green dress that complimented her skin tone wonderfully. A satisfied smile appeared as she looked at my gown.

"I knew when I bought the dress that it would look stunning on you." She said and my eyes widened in shock.

"You bought me the dress?" I frowned. I presumed that Klaus had given it to me but I was clearly mistaken.

"Yes, I thought the purple would look nice with your hair." She continued to smile, leaving me increasingly more concerned.

"Did you poison it?" I asked slowly, wondering if the beautiful garment would be the cause of my death.

"And risk the wrath of my brothers?" Rebekah huffed in denial, "Considered it a peace offering. I may not like you but you're clearly here to stay and my mother would rather I not have feuds with the locals. I forgave your twin for stabbing me in the back- literally."
