CHAPTER FIFTY FIVE
It was oddly silent in the house when I awoke, making me instantly suspicious. I narrowed my eyes at my bedroom door as I sat up in bed. Usually, the Mikaelson's frequent arguments doubled as an alarm clock for me. This morning, however, I could not hear a single sound.
I glanced momentarily at the clock on my bedside table and discovered that it was midday. I let out a tired huff and looked around my new bedroom whilst I mustered up the effort to actually get out of bed. The room was smaller than the others but I had chosen it because it had the most natural light. It was fairly empty, with only necessary furniture and a couple of paintings. The whole room exuded an old, musty smell and I instantly vowed to put some scented candles on the shopping list.
After finally pushing myself out of bed, I rummaged around my suitcase for something appropriate to wear. I eventually settled on a casual t-shirt and my favorite pair of jeans, which I knew I wouldn't be able to wear for much longer due to the impending expansion of my belly.
Suspicion flooded my thoughts as I made my way downstairs to look for everyone. I found them all in the sitting room and I stopped in the threshold and narrowed my eyes. All four of the men were seated on various sofas and were currently engaging in some silent reading.
Klaus held what looked to be an old book of poetry whilst Finn had a fairly modern fiction paperback. Elijah had a grimoire in his lap whilst Kol peered over his shoulder. It was oddly peaceful and I briefly wondered if I had fallen into a different dimension where the Mikaelsons behaved like adults.
"Good morning, Emilia." Elijah greeted me without looking up from the grimoire.
"What on earth are you doing?" I asked skeptically, frowning as I leant against the wall.
"Reading!" Klaus announced, looking up at me with an irritating smirk, "Pick a book off the shelf, love, and join us!"
I looked over at the towering bookshelves with a grimace. The spines looked ancient and just looking at them made me want to wash my hands.
"I would rather not participate in whatever is going on here." I answered, gesturing to the four men.
"Don't be silly, love!" Klaus grinned before patting the empty space next to him, "Come and sit down."
"Did someone die?" I wondered aloud, "I can't think of any other reason why you would all be so calmly happy."
"No, Emilia, as far as I am aware, nobody has died today." Elijah answered casually as he turned the page, "We merely decided to provide a serene atmosphere for your wellbeing."
I rolled my eyes at his words, "Well, this serene atmosphere is creeping me out. I don't think that Kol has ever remained silent for this long! Did someone dagger him?"
Kol scowled up at me, "No, darling, I am most certainly not daggered."
"Phew!" I said, feigning relief by gasping and dramatically holding my hand over my chest, "For a second I feared that I would be left alone with this lot!"
"Don't worry, darling! I would never subject you to that fate!" Kol grinned as he stood up, hurried over to me and planted a sloppy kiss on my forehead.
"Well, that answers the question of which one of us has the shortest attention span." Finn announced, closing his book with a sigh, "We only managed to read for twenty minutes before Kol got bored."
"I was actually bored after five minutes but I didn't want to endure another lecture from Elijah." Kol clarified and he threw an arm over my shoulder.
Elijah looked up from the book and sent his younger brother an exasperated look. "It was not a lecture, I merely advised that you refrain from running around the house and learn to sit still."
"I don't know why you bother, Elijah." Klaus said, his eyes sparkling with mischief, "If Esther failed to get him to stay still as an errant child, I highly doubt you can teach him now."
"It is never too late to learn a new skill." Finn commented and Klaus grinned widely.
"Is it safe to assume that the book club from hell has concluded?" I asked with a hopeful smile.
"Well, seeing as Elijah is the only one still reading, it seems that our family reading has concluded." Klaus replied with a smile.
"Thank God!" I said strutting into the room and planting myself beside Klaus on the sofa, "I was about to go and burn one of Elijah's suits to cause some drama."
Elijah looked up at me from his book with narrowed eyes and I grinned at him. He let out a long sigh before closing the grimoire and setting it on the coffee table in front of him. "I would prefer if all of my suits remained intact but if you are in the mood to destroy something, I'm sure I could find something ghastly in Niklaus' wardrobe."
"I might take you up on that offer." I admitted, "This house is already driving me stir crazy!"
"It is imperative that you remain here." Elijah reminded me, "It is the only place that we can all but guarantee your safety."
"Which I why I want to hurry up and find this fucking witch so we can get the hell out of here." I replied, "Any leads?"
Elijah hesitated before admitting, "A couple. Klaus and I were planning on checking them out today."
"Please let me come!" I said, scowling when all four men immediately began shaking their heads, "Melissa has had so many opportunities to hurt me and she hasn't! Please, I want answers more than any of you do!"
"When we find Melissa, we shall bring her to you." Klaus assured me and I let out an annoyed grunt.
I knew that it was in my best interests to remain, however, it was still extremely frustrating. I was only in the early stages of pregnancy and I already felt completely useless. I knew that my frustration over the matter would only continue as the pregnancy went on.
My frustration was cut short when a loud knock sounded. We all froze and looked towards the door in concern.
"Does anyone know we're here?" I whispered and Finn shook his head.
Finn, Kol and Klaus positioned themselves around me whilst Elijah left the room to investigate. My heart pounded in my chest as we waited. I couldn't hear anything clearly but I watched as Klaus raised his eyebrows in mild surprise. Moments later, Elijah re-entered the living room followed by the last person I ever expected to see in New Orleans.
"Elena?" I asked in bafflement as I took in my twin sister's tear stained face.
"Emilia, I need your help!"
