CHAPTER THIRTY

The next morning, I sat with my sister at the Grill, chatting as we tucked into our breakfasts. Despite Elijah's rejection, which left me feeling rather pathetic, I kept my word to him and was currently attempting to see what information my sister had.

"I genuinely thought that she was going to kill him!" I told my sister as I dipped a chip in my milkshake, "But she just forgave him!"

Elena nodded as I popped the chip into my mouth, "After those dreams Bonnie had about the coffin, we were absolutely certain that Esther would help us."

"What are we going to do, Elena?" I said with a dismayed sigh, "I don't want to spend the rest of my life as a human blood bag."

I deserved an oscar for my performance.

"We'll find a way, Emilia," Elena smiled sadly, placing a hand on top of mine, "I received an invitation before I left the house. The Mikaelsons are having a ball! Can you believe it?"

"A ball?" I asked with furrowed brows. My heart ached at the realisation that I had not been invited. It seemed that the Mikaelsons had decided to cut me out of their life. Me sitting here with my sister, trying to get information for them now felt futile.

"Did you not get an invite?" Elena frowned, "But you're engaged to Klaus."

"Actually he broke off the engagement because of everything that happened with Mikael." I said quietly and Elena's eyes widened in excitement.

"That's amazing, Emilia!" She grinned, "At least one good thing came out of waking Mikael. You're free!"

"Yeah." I answered numbly and took a sip of my milkshake.

"Well anyway, there was a message from Esther on the back of my invitation." Elena said and my ears perked up, "So maybe she does want to help us after all?"

"Hopefully," I nodded as I polished off the rest of my food, "Keep me posted, Elena. I need to know if there's a solution or if I need to come up with my own plan."

"Damon and Stefan don't trust you." Elena said and I scoffed.

"The Salvatore brothers don't trust anyone when it comes to you, Elena." I said, "It's called love."

My twin let out a shaky breath, "I think I love them both, Emilia. I don't know what to do."

"Trust me, I understand." I said with a humorless chuckle, "We can't control how we feel, so we have to control our actions instead."

"And do what?"

"I'll let you know if I find out "

After breakfast with my sister, I made my way back to Elijah's house, fully intending on gathering my things and moving out. When I approached the front door, I noticed a figure, placing something on the doorstep.

"Kol?" I questioned and he turned around, looking at me in surprise.

"The blonde doppelgänger." He smirked, gesturing to the box he had left, "I was tasked with delivering your invitation. The Mikaelsons are hosting a ball tonight."

"I heard," I said, crossing my arms over my chest as I watched him with amusement, "You poor thing, only awake for one day and your brother has you playing mailman."

Kol cocked an eyebrow, "You certainly have a sharp tongue. Unfortunately, my mother has a new rule against feeding on the locals, or else I'd have you pinned against the wall by now."

"Don't threaten me with a good time." I said and watched his eyes light up with delight.

"Tell me, how did a pretty thing like you end up being caught up in our family drama?" He asked, taking a step towards me, "You've become quite the topic of conversation in our household."

"Well, long story short, Nik wanted to sacrifice me to break his curse so he seduced me but then he accidentally fell in love with me and it complicated things. Then he learnt that I had a twin sister and decided to sacrifice her instead." I began, recounting the chaotic mess of the last year, "I broke up with him and then met Elijah. We plotted to kill him and ended up sleeping together a few times. After we failed to kill him, Elijah was daggered and I ended up being blackmailed into marrying Klaus."

"That's the short version?" Kol chuckled.

"That's not even half of it," I laughed, "But I'll spare you the complicated details, mainly because I barely understand them."

"So you and Nik are engaged?"

"Not anymore."

"I'd say I was sorry that you were brought into the family drama but that would be a lie," Kol grinned as he reached and twirled a blonde curl around his finger, "Immortality can get rather boring sometimes and I have a feeling that you are going to bring me some much needed entertainment."

I pulled my hair from his grip and gave him a warning look, "Things are already messy enough, Kol. I don't need you to complicate things further."

He pouted playfully, "But I want to."

I narrowed my eyes, "You just want to punish your brother for keeping you in a box "

Kol grinned maniacally, "I'm surprised that you don't want to punish Nik. Or maybe you'd rather punish Elijah; he came home rather grouchy last night."

"I've already tried revenge sex, it just leads to more drama." I shrugged.

"I was thinking more along the lines of maiming and torture but that would work too!" Kol replied, his eyes fixated on me in wild fascination, "I best be going but save me a dance tonight?"

"I have zero intentions of dancing tonight."

"That's a pity, I heard you were a ballerina." He said with a dangerous look in his eye, "You'll just have to dance for me another time then."

He began to leave and I called after him, "In your dreams!"

He spun around and blew me a kiss, "Every night, darling."

Along with the invitation, Kol had left a medium sized box. I already knew what would be inside before I opened it; Niklaus had a habit of buying me clothes to wear. I sucked in a breath as I lifted the lid; the dress was absolutely stunning. It was a rich purple in colour and it was decorated with delicate lace. I would have thought it looked like a wedding dress, if not for the colour.

A part of me wanted to send it back and wear something else but I also didn't want to hurt Klaus by refusing his gift. I sighed and sat on the bed, gazing at the dress longingly. What was I going to do?

I pulled my phone out and dialed the one person whose advice I trusted.

"Hey, Aunt Jen! I'm going to a ball tonight. Wanna be my plus one?"

A/N: Writing this book is honestly an addiction at this point! Who's looking forward to the ball? Things are about to get very, VERY messy!
