CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

I had a grim smile on my face as I returned to Mystic Falls. I'd had nearly 26 full days of peace before Elijah finally contacted me, his message brief and cold. Reluctantly, I had called my teachers to fake an illness before hopping on the first flight back here.

I couldn't help but notice that the energy felt different now. Maybe it was just the full moon, which would rise in a matter of hours. Or maybe the atmosphere had changed in Klaus' presence.

A black car pulled up beside me to pick me up from the airport and I removed my sunglasses before climbing into the passenger seat. Elijah looked distant when I turned my head towards him. He gave me a polite nod before putting his foot on the accelerator.

"How are you, Elijah?" I asked quietly as I watched him, not really knowing where we stood with each other, "Other than yesterday, I haven't heard from you in nearly a month."

"Yes," Elijah drawled, "I'm afraid your sister and the Salvatore brothers played a hand in that. They thought it best to take me off the playing board by sticking a dagger in my chest."

My eyes widened at the news and the cavalier way he delivered it, "Elijah, I'm so sorry. If I had have known-"

"You needn't apologise, Emilia." Elijah interrupted, "Your sister and I have now reached an understanding and have put it behind us."

An uneasy silence fell over the car and I shifted in my seat as I fiddled with the necklace Elijah had given me. I could practically feel the tension radiating off him, likely due to the impending events tonight.

"What do you want me to do?" I asked, dread making itself known in the pit of my stomach.

"For now, nothing." Elijah informed me and I frowned, "Go home and spend the evening with your Aunt."

"Why?" I laughed humorlessly, "Why would you ask me to come if you don't want me to do anything?"

"I need you close, somewhere I can keep an eye on you." Elijah admitted and I raised a questioning brow, "And Klaus expects you to be here. Your absence would have been noted, causing my brother to send one of his henchmen to look for you."

"That's a stupid reason, Elijah." I told him and his fists tightened on the steering wheel.

"Yes, well we made a deal that you would help me kill my brother," He began calmly, "And this is how you shall help me."

"Have you given Elena the potion yet? The one that will save her life?" I asked and the vampire let out a long sigh.

"The potion has been rendered useless; Damon fed your sister vampire blood."

My lips parted in shock and I pinched the bridge of my nose as a wave of frustration flooded through me. Not only would my sister hate being a vampire, but I also doubted she would survive it.

"Is there no other way?" I asked helplessly.

"I'm afraid not, Emilia."

He pulled up next to my house and I gave him a sad smile as I placed my hand on his knee.

"Thank you, for doing everything you could to help myself and my family. Your kindness will not be forgotten." I said as tears began to well in my eyes, "I know what has to be done tonight and I'm sorry that you have to be the one to do it. Klaus has done some awful things but that doesn't mean that killing him will be easy. You love him, we both do..." I trailed off, unable to continue as my lip trembled.

Elijah placed a hand over mine and looked at me properly for the first time since he picked me up. He reached up to cup my cheek with his other hand, using his thumb to brush away a fallen tear.
