CHAPTER FIFTY

Being in denial wasn't working as well as I had hoped.

Elijah found me the next morning on the floor of my bathroom dressed only in a nightgown. I looked up at him with tired eyes from where I sat, resting my back against the wall. He gave me a small smile as he crouched before me and grasped my hands in his. I attempted to return the smile but it ended up looking more like a grimace.

"Are you alright, my love?" Elijah asked, rubbing his thumb across the skin of my palm in soothing circles.

"I think there is vomiting on my hair." I whispered, wincing at the possibility.

Releasing my hands, Elijah patted down my messy, unbrushed hair with a practiced precision. A shorter strand kept falling in front of my eyes so he genuinely tucked it behind my ear. After further examination Elijah confirmed, "I can assure you that your hair is perfectly fine."

"I need to brush it but if I move I fear that I will vomit again." I told him, my voice weak. Elijah sent me a reassuring smile as he reached up and pulled my hairbrush down from the countertop. He then began to carefully brush the strands that fell over my shoulders.

"Do you think you can turn around so I can brush the back?" He asked once he had finished.

"I think so," I answered, slowly twisting my body until my back was facing him. He combed the brush through my hair in silence as I mulled over my thoughts. I desperately tried to avoid the truth that was staring me in the face.

"There!" Elijah announced as he concluded his task, "Now your hair looks just as beautiful as always!"

"I know what you're thinking," I accused him as I turned back around and looked up at him. He raised a questioning eyebrow and I let out a sharp exhale, "It's just food poisoning. It has to be!"

Even as I said the words, I knew them to be false. Silent tears began their descent down my cheeks and I squeezed my eyes closed in an attempt to banish them. When I opened my eyes, our gazes collided and he smiled sadly.

"I am here for you, Emilia, no matter what." Elijah told me decisively and I sent him a thankful smile.

"I just..." I began, my words trailing off. I cleared my throat before trying again, "I just can't accept it because if I do, everything will change. I can kiss my career goodbye along with my dreams of traveling the world. And what about the others? They may not be as accepting of the situation as you and Finn are."

"I can guarantee you, Emilia, that my siblings will be overjoyed with the news after a slight adjustment period." Elijah assured me and I let out a scoff.

"They're going to think that I was unfaithful." I said with absolute certainty.

"They trust you, Emilia, as do I." Elijah told me sincerely, "And together, we will learn of how this pregnancy came to be."

I flinched at the word, shaking my head adamantly. Using the wall to support myself, I stood on unsteady legs.

"Don't use that word!" I said, pointing a finger at him, "You are by no means qualified to diagnose me!"

"Emilia-"

"Are Klaus, Kol and Rebekah back yet?" I interrupted him.

"Not yet," Elijah shook his head, "But Klaus has been in touch and they should be home soon."

I nodded sharply, "When they come back, don't you dare spread your lies!"

"Emilia, I think-"

"Elijah, do not argue with me on this!" I said, sending him a warning glare. He shut his mouth, an unreadable expression crossing his face as he took a step backwards.
