CHAPTER FORTY
"Emilia! Get off the phone and try this on!" Rebekah hissed from across the designer store. Ignoring her, I rolled my eyes and continued my phone conversation.
"Yes, that would be absolutely wonderful!" I replied to the person on the other end of the line, "How long do I have to decide?"
"As I'm sure you can understand, Miss Gilbert, this is a highly sought after role." The woman replied as I nervously tapped my foot on the floor, "We need your answer by tomorrow morning at the latest or we shall move on to other applicants."
"Okay, thank you. I'll discuss it with my family and get back to you." I said before hanging up.
"Finally!" Rebekah drawled, appearing directly in front of me, "I was getting bored. What on earth could possibly be more important than shopping with me?"
"Oh, I don't know, maybe getting offered my dream role?" I said sarcastically and Rebekah blinked at me.
"So you're going to be in another ballet?" She asked glumly and I frowned.
"Potentially," I replied with a tight smile, "Why?"
"Well, I just thought that you were planning on prioritizing my family." She pouted and I shook my head in exasperation.
"What is up with you, Rebekah? One second you hate me, the next you're crying because I might be leaving."
"Whether I like it or not, you have been good for my family." She answered as she looked through a rack of dresses, "I haven't seen us all this content in centuries."
"I'm not putting my dreams on hold just because you all want to fuck me." I smiled sweetly and Rebekah rolled her eyes.
"Just try these on." She pushed a pile of dresses into my arms and I stumbled at the sudden weight.
Placating her, I followed her to the changing rooms. I made quick work of changing into a tight black dress that fell just above my knees. I didn't know how I felt about wearing such a form fitting item of clothing. I pulled at the fabric as I glowered at my reflection in the mirror. Hugging an arm to my chest, I pulled open the curtain to show Rebekah.
"It's a bit tight," I grimaced.
"It's supposed to be tight." Rebekah retorted, "Blimey, Emilia, I didn't think you were the self conscious sort."
"I'm not, I'm just not very comfortable in these types of clothes." I informed her, "They're not really my style."
"Fine, let's get out of here then." Rebekah said decisively, "We'll go to the lingerie store next."
I let out a groan, "Do we have to?"
She frowned, "I thought you'd enjoy shopping with me."
Guilt flooded through me at the sight of her crestfallen demeanor. It was sometimes easy to forget that behind her bitchy attitude was an emotionally vulnerable girl. Taking a step forward, I pressed a gentle hand on her shoulder.
"I do enjoy shopping with you," I assured her, "I just feel more comfortable in less fancy stores."
She bit her lip with uncertainty, "I suppose that we could go to some budget clothes shops if that would make you happy."
I barely suppressed a smile at her words, "Alright, but I'm not buying any lingerie."
"Why?" She whined, "You'd look so amazing!"
I chuckled as I drew the curtain to change back into my regular clothes.
"I don't think that I need to wear anything fancy to impress your brothers." I told her, "I could be wearing a winter dressing gown and they would still ambush me."
