CHAPTER TEN

I was being reckless. It wasn't exactly an unusual occurrence but usually my recklessness was fueled by stupidity. This time, however, it was fueled by hope. I let out a small wince of pain as I slipped my feet into my trainers whilst Jenna looked at me like I was insane, which I probably was.

"This is an absolutely stupid idea, Emilia." She said, her arms crossed as she lent against the wall. She watched me with a frown as I tied up my laces. "You risk your foot by walking, let alone running!"

"I'm just going for a light jog, Aunt Jen." I said, ignoring the jolt of pain as I stood. I finally had answers about my foot and if Elijah had been correct, tomorrow it would be healed. In my mind, that meant I could damage it as much as I wanted to today.

Dressed in jogging bottoms and a sports bra, I was determined to get a head start on getting myself back in shape for ballet. Was it stupid? Yes, but after literally months of barely doing anything, I was desperate. Ignoring Jenna's protests, I darted out of the house and began a slow jog on the sidewalk. My foot hurt every time it made contact with the ground but I couldn't care less; I felt free. I was so excited for tomorrow, when I could deal with my injury once and for all.

My jog was cut short when a car pulled up beside me.

"Get in, Blondie!" Damon shouted out the window, "I need you!"

"Ew, no!" I scrunched up my face at his request.

Damon rolled his eyes, "Rose called. Elena's gone rogue."

"Jesus Christ!" I cursed as I climbed into the passenger seat. The car lurched forward and Damon put his foot hard on the accelerator. "What has my sister done this time?"

"She's trying to contact Klaus so she can sacrifice herself!" Damon explained as he weaved through the traffic.

"Is she stupid?" I gaped, "Why on earth would she do that?"

"She's your sister, you tell me!" Damon retorted and pinched the bridge of my nose as I sighed with frustration. Quickly formulating a plan in my mind, I pulled my phone from my pocket and typed out a text message. "Who are you messaging?"

"Jenna." I answered smoothly, "I'm just letting her know that Elena and I probably won't be home in time for dinner."

I sent the text and slipped the phone back into my pocket. Looking out the window, my eyebrows furrowed in confusion as we passed a sign. We were in the same town that I had visited with Elijah yesterday. Nervous butterflies erupted in my stomach as Damon drove past the restaurant that Elijah and I had eaten at.

What had Elena gotten herself into?

"What are you doing here?" Damon asked, causing my sister to startle and she turned around in shock.

"What are you doing here?" Elena asked Damon before her eyes flickered to me and her lips pursed. Her head turned towards Rose, our former kidnapper, a look of betrayal on her face. "You called them?"

"I'm sorry, Elena." Rose replied.

"You said that you understood."

"She lied." Damon interjected.

A dark haired woman appeared next to Rose, a starstruck smile on her face. "Damon Salvatore!"

"Look Damon, it's one of your fans." I deadpanned.

"Get rid of her." Damon ordered Rose.

"No way!" The woman said in awe as the vampire dragged her away.
