Chapter 17:
The Care and the Playfulness

The kingdom was cloaked in the soft hues of twilight, and a quiet concern settled over the palace. Yudhishthira, known for his unwavering strength and wisdom, had succumbed to a high fever. The once resolute king now lay in his chambers, weakened by illness. His condition was a source of worry for his brothers and the entire court.

Draupadi, ever attentive and compassionate, took it upon herself to care for Yudhishthira during this trying time. She was by his side constantly, administering medicine, checking his temperature, and providing comfort with her gentle presence. Her soothing voice and nurturing touch were a balm to his feverish state, offering him both physical and emotional relief.

As Draupadi busied herself with tending to Yudhishthira, the other Pandavas—Arjuna, Bhima, Nakula, and Sahadeva—found moments to lighten the atmosphere with their characteristic camaraderie and playful teasing. They knew that Yudhishthira, despite his illness, had a strong spirit and would appreciate the humor to lift his spirits.

Arjuna, with a mischievous grin, said, “Look at Yudhishthira, lying in bed like a king who’s been overthrown. How will he ever regain his throne if he continues to rest so comfortably?”

Bhima, always ready to add to the jest, chuckled and added, “Perhaps he’s plotting to make this illness his new strategy to avoid all responsibilities. What a clever way to delegate tasks!”

Nakula, not missing an opportunity to join in, teased, “I suppose we’ll have to appoint a new chief for our council meetings. Who will manage the kingdom’s affairs while Yudhishthira is ‘recovering’ here?”

Sahadeva, with a twinkle in his eye, remarked, “And let’s not forget the amount of attention Draupadi is giving him. It’s clear that she’s determined to keep him pampered and spoiled. Is this what they call a royal treatment?”

Yudhishthira, though weak and feverish, couldn’t help but smile at the playful banter of his brothers. He appreciated their efforts to lighten the mood and bring some humor into his convalescence.

Draupadi, while focused on her caregiving, glanced at the brothers with a mix of amusement and exasperation. “You four are certainly making a spectacle of this. Yudhishthira needs rest and recuperation, not more teasing.”

Arjuna, catching Draupadi’s gaze, said with a smile, “We’re just trying to remind Yudhishthira that even in sickness, he’s surrounded by those who care for him. And, of course, we want him to recover quickly so that he can return to his royal duties.”

Bhima, with a final jest, added, “Besides, who else would we have to tease if not our eldest brother? It’s all in good fun.”

Yudhishthira, feeling the warmth of his brothers’ affection and Draupadi’s devoted care, responded with a heartfelt tone, “I am grateful for each of you—your humor, your care, and your support. Even in times of illness, it is your presence that comforts me.”

Draupadi, finishing up her tasks, turned to the Pandavas with a smile. “You have all played your parts today. Let us ensure that Yudhishthira gets the rest he needs so that he can return to his duties with renewed strength.”

As the evening drew to a close, the Pandavas settled into a more relaxed and supportive environment. Draupadi’s care and the brothers’ playful teasing had created a sense of warmth and camaraderie despite the circumstances.

In this moment, the bond between the Pandavas and Draupadi was reaffirmed. They understood that their relationships were built on mutual respect, affection, and the ability to support each other through both lighthearted moments and serious challenges.

As Yudhishthira rested, he knew that his recovery was not just a matter of physical healing but also of the love and support of those around him. The care and companionship of his family and Draupadi were the true remedies to his illness, helping him face each day with hope and resilience.
