One thing I did not expect Jennifer to be was a heavy drinker.
"How are you doing with the drinks over there?" I ask as she finishes her sixth drink.
"I'm a little tipsy, but I'm fine," she assures, picking up a chicken lettuce wrap from her plate and placing it in her mouth.
"You ate enough before you drank all that liquor, right?".
"Yes, yes, I made sure to eat plenty before I started to drink. It isn't my first time drinking, babe," she giggles, grabbing another wrap from the plate.
It may sound stupid, but hearing her call me babe for the first time sends a wave of euphoria flooding my body. Usually, she refers to me by my name, but this is the first time she's ever called me babe.
"You know, this is the first time you've called me something besides my nickname, right?".
"Really? Well, then, I'll just have to change that. It's not fair that you call me babe and baby while all I do is refer to you by your name, so I'll continue doing the same from now on."
Now that I'm thinking about it, did we ever confirm if we were officially dating, or have we just been going with the flow?
I don't know if I should bring that up or not because she might bring up that dumbass husband of hers, but then again, I feel we're way beyond being just friends.
"Jenni, I have something I want to ask you?" I ask, starting to feel a bit nauseous.
"Sure, go ahead," she says, leaning closer to me, looking at me with those captivating brown eyes.
"We've never actually discussed if we were officially dating. I have referred to you as my girlfriend when other people ask about you, but I don't know where we stand regarding our relationship".
Looking taken aback, she directs her attention to the ground as if trying to find the right words to say next.
"Well," she fidgets with her fingers, "that can be changed if you ask me a certain question at this moment," she says, glancing up at me.
Wait...does she want me to ask her out right now?
In a flash, I removed myself from my seat to sit beside her, intertwining our fingers.
With our eyes locking together, I gathered all the courage I needed to ask her this simple yet horrifying question, hoping I didn't misread what she meant.
"Jennifer, the moment I stepped into that classroom and saw you, you gave me this happiness I thought I would've never felt. I thought no woman on this earth was made for me, but then you came along, and I knew instantly that you were perfect. You make me laugh, you encourage me, support me, and make me feel like I'm one of the luckiest guys on earth to be with a woman as special as you are, so would you please give me the pleasure of officially becoming my girlfriend?"
Tearing up, she throws herself on me, wrapping her arms around my neck, repeating yes over and over again.
"R-really?".
"Yes, you don't understand how long have I waited for you to ask me that? I wanted to bring it up before, but I didn't know if I would seem pushy or like I was rushing you, so I stayed silent about it."
"Baby, don't ever be scared to tell me something because you never know if I might feel the same way," I say, holding her tightly while kissing her softly.
Pulling away, she wipes away her tears, then reaches into her purse, pulling out a hand mirror.
"If my makeup is ruined, I'm blaming you," she playfully glares, looking into the mirror.
"How are you possibly going to blame me?".
"Because your sweetest is the reason why I'm crying."
As my jaw drops , I look at her in shock, as she giggles at my disbelief.
"Okay, my makeup is fine. That's good because the surprise should be starting anytime now," she says, putting her mirror back in her purse.
Finally, I've been dying to know what this surprise is for the past two hours.
"Ladies and gentlemen, can I please have all your attention on the stage? We are now about to begin our talent night," a woman over the speakers says as we all turn around to the stage.
On the stage was a woman who looked to be in her mid-forties. She was wearing a royal blue cocktail dress that stopped just above the knee, sparkly silver heels, and simple sapphire blue jewelry.
"If any of you have been here before, you should already know that every Friday, we have our talent night, meaning we pull a random person from the audience to show us their musical talent," she announces as everyone claps in excitement.
"Tonight, we will only choose three lucky people to show us their musical talents, so let's begin the choosing," she yells, walking away from the mic.
A spotlight flashes in the audience, searching for that lucky person they'll choose first.
It lands on a man sitting in a corner by himself but looking very prepared for this opportunity.
Walking to the stage, he steps up there, approaches the announcer, and whispers something to her.
Nodding, she goes to the back for a second, then comes back with a guitar and a stool.
Placing the stool in the middle of the stage, she returns to where she was placed before as the guy sits on the stool, positioning the guitar so he can play correctly.
"Hello, my name is Antonio Alvaro, and I will play Livin la vida loca for you tonight."
