The days had grown shorter, and the chill of winter was settling in, but inside China and Russia’s home, warmth and love filled the air. Russia was now two months into his pregnancy, and although his body had begun to change more noticeably, it was the emotional weight of the impending parenthood that occupied his thoughts the most.
One frosty morning, Russia awoke to find the familiar weight of his three cats nestled close to him. Each of them seemed to sense the changes in him and had become even more affectionate than usual. White paw, the smallest of the three, was curled up against his belly, her purring a comforting vibration against his skin. On the other side, Sharik, the large fluffy tabby, was sprawled lazily over Russia's legs, while Misha, the gray-and-white one, was perched at the foot of the bed, watching him with her wide green eyes. (Sorry if the names are cringe :/ )
Russia smiled at the sight, feeling a surge of affection for his pets. They had always been a source of comfort, but now, in these uncertain times, their presence was even more reassuring. He gently stroked White paw's soft fur, earning a louder purr in response.
"Good morning, my little ones," Russia murmured softly, his voice still thick with sleep.
As he lay there, his thoughts began to drift. The question that had been nagging at the back of his mind for weeks came to the forefront once again: 'Will I be a good mother?' It wasn’t the first time he’d asked himself this, and it likely wouldn’t be the last. The idea of raising a child, of being responsible for another life, was both thrilling and terrifying.
The door creaked open, and China stepped into the room, a tray of breakfast in his hands. He smiled warmly at the sight of Russia surrounded by their cats, his heart swelling with love for his partner. “Good morning, love,” he greeted, setting the tray on the bedside table.
Russia turned his head and returned the smile, but China could see a hint of something in his eyes—uncertainty, maybe even fear. He sat down on the edge of the bed and reached out to brush a lock of hair away from Russia’s face. “What’s on your mind?” China asked gently.
Russia sighed, leaning into China’s touch. “I was just thinking… about the baby. About being a mother.”
China’s expression softened, understanding immediately what Russia meant. “You’re going to be an amazing mother,” he said firmly, his hand moving to rest over Russia’s. “I have no doubt about that.”
“But what if I’m not?” Russia whispered, his voice laced with worry. “What if I make mistakes? What if I can’t protect them the way I should?”
China shook his head, his thumb gently stroking the back of Russia’s hand. “We’ll make mistakes—that’s inevitable. But we’ll learn from them. And as long as we love our child and do our best, that’s what really matters. You’re already so caring, Russia. I see it every day, in the way you take care of everyone around you, me, and especially in how you’ve been handling the pregnancy.”
Russia looked down at their joined hands, his heart warming at China’s words. It was true that he cared deeply for those close to him, but being a parent felt like a whole different level of responsibility. “I just want to do everything right,” he admitted softly.
“And you will,” China assured him. “You don’t have to do this alone. We’re in this together, remember? And our baby will be surrounded by so much love—not just from us, but from all our friends and family. They’re already so lucky to have you as their mother.”
Russia’s heart swelled at China’s words, and he felt a bit of the fear begin to melt away. He nodded slowly, squeezing China’s hand. “Thank you,” he whispered, feeling a little more confident in his ability to take on this new role.
China leaned down to press a tender kiss to Russia’s lips, his love for him evident in the way he held him close. “Now, let’s get some food into you,” he said, pulling back with a smile. “You need to keep your strength up for both of you.”
Russia chuckled softly, nodding as he sat up a bit more. The cats, sensing movement, shifted slightly but stayed close, as if they knew their presence was needed. Russia reached for the tray, taking the bowl of warm oatmeal that China had prepared.
As he ate, Russia found himself relaxing more, the warmth of the food and the love surrounding him soothing his nerves. Sharik stretched out over his legs, and Russia couldn’t help but laugh softly at the cat’s laziness.
“They’re going to be good with the baby, aren’t they?” Russia mused, glancing down at the cats.
“I’m sure they will be,” China replied, watching as White paw nuzzled closer to Russia’s stomach. “They already seem protective of you.”
“I hope the baby likes them,” Russia said, his voice soft as he imagined their future with their child and their little family.
“They will,” China said with certainty. “How could they not?”
After breakfast, Russia felt the familiar weariness of pregnancy creeping in. The second month had brought with it more exhaustion, and he found himself needing to rest more often. China noticed this and quickly moved to take the tray away, allowing Russia to lie back down.
“Why don’t you rest for a while?” China suggested, pulling the blankets up over Russia. “I’ll take care of everything else.”
Russia nodded, grateful for China’s understanding. He reached out to touch China’s hand once more before closing his eyes. “I love you,” he murmured, his voice already laced with sleep.
“I love you too,” China whispered back, leaning down to press another kiss to Russia’s forehead. “Get some rest, my love.”
As Russia drifted off to sleep, the cats curled up closer to him, their presence a comforting weight against his side. China watched them for a moment, a soft smile on his face, before quietly leaving the room to let Russia rest.
Downstairs, China busied himself with preparing things for the baby, going over the plans they had made and ensuring everything was ready. There was still so much to do, but knowing that Russia was resting, safe and sound, made it all worth it.
As he worked, China couldn’t help but think about the future they were building together. It wasn’t just the two of them anymore; soon, they would be a family. And though the road ahead was uncertain, one thing was for sure—they would face it together, with love and strength.
