The air was crisp and cool as China and Russia made their way to the World Health Organization's headquarters. Russia, now three months into his pregnancy, was starting to show more prominently, his hand resting protectively over the small bump that had grown beneath his clothes. Today was a special day—they were going to find out the gender of their baby.
As they entered the building, Russia felt a mix of excitement and anxiety swirling in his chest. He glanced up at China, who was walking beside him, his hand firmly but gently holding Russia's. China’s calm demeanor helped soothe some of Russia’s nerves, but there was still that lingering fear in the back of his mind. 'What if he’s disappointed?'
Inside the examination room, Russia lay back on the table, his heart pounding as the doctor prepared the ultrasound. China stood beside him, his hand still gripping Russia’s, offering silent support. The room was filled with the soft sound of the machine humming to life, and then, the image of their baby appeared on the screen.
“There we go,” WHO said with a warm smile, adjusting the screen so they could both see. “Let’s take a look.”
Russia’s breath hitched as he watched the screen, his eyes fixated on the tiny form moving within him. WHO carefully moved the probe, searching for the baby’s gender. Finally, after a few moments that felt like an eternity, she smiled and turned to the couple.
“Congratulations, you’re having a girl,” she announced.
Russia’s eyes widened, and his heart skipped a beat. A girl. They were going to have a daughter. He quickly turned to look at China, trying to gauge his reaction, fear creeping into his mind again. Would China be happy? He knew how much tradition meant to China, and though he knew it was irrational, he couldn’t help but worry.
But the moment their eyes met, Russia’s fears melted away. China’s expression had softened into one of pure joy, his eyes shining with happiness. A broad smile spread across his face, and he leaned down to press a tender kiss to Russia’s forehead.
“A girl,” China whispered, his voice filled with awe. “We’re going to have a little girl.”
Russia felt tears prick at the corners of his eyes, overwhelmed with relief and love. He let out a shaky breath, nodding as he smiled up at China. “Yes, a girl,” he echoed softly, his heart swelling with joy.
China gently cupped Russia’s face in his hands, his thumbs brushing away the tears that had begun to fall. “I couldn’t be happier,” he said sincerely, his voice full of love. “She’s going to be perfect, just like you.”
Russia’s smile grew, his earlier fears completely dispelled by China’s reaction. He felt a deep sense of contentment settle over him, knowing that they were truly in this together, no matter what.
After the appointment, as they were leaving the building, Russia pulled out his phone and quickly dialed Kazakhstan’s number. He couldn’t wait to share the news with his brother.
“Hey, Kazakhstan,” Russia greeted when his brother answered the call.
“Big brother!” Kazakhstan’s cheerful voice came through the phone. “How did it go? Did you find out the gender?”
Russia couldn’t help the smile that spread across his face as he answered. “Yes, we did. We’re having a girl.”
There was a moment of silence on the other end, and then Kazakhstan let out a whoop of joy. “A girl! I’m going to be an uncle to a niece! That’s amazing! Congratulations, big brother!”
Russia chuckled softly, his heart warmed by his brother’s excitement. “Thank you, Kazakhstan. I knew you’d be happy.”
“Of course I’m happy!” Kazakhstan replied enthusiastically. “I can’t wait to meet her. She’s going to be so loved by all of us.”
Russia felt his eyes water again, touched by his brother’s words. “She will be. I can’t wait for you to meet her too.”
After ending the call, Russia turned to China, who had been watching him with a fond smile. “Kazakhstan’s really excited,” Russia said, slipping his phone back into his pocket.
“I could tell,” China replied with a chuckle. “I’m glad your family is happy for us. Our daughter is going to be surrounded by so much love.”
Russia nodded, his heart full. “She really is.”
With their spirits high, China suggested they go out to start shopping for their daughter’s things. “We should start preparing,” he said as they walked hand in hand down the street. “We’ll need clothes, and we should think about how we want to decorate her room.”
Russia’s eyes lit up at the idea, his excitement growing. “Yes, let’s do that. I want everything to be perfect for her.”
They spent the rest of the day browsing through various shops, looking at baby clothes, toys, and room decorations. Russia was drawn to the soft pastel colors, imagining their daughter’s room filled with warm, comforting shades. China helped him pick out the most delicate fabrics and the cutest outfits, his meticulous eye for detail ensuring that everything they chose was of the highest quality.
As they shopped, Russia couldn’t help but smile at the sight of China holding up tiny dresses and booties, his expression filled with tenderness. It was clear that China was just as excited about their daughter as he was, and that made Russia’s heart swell with love and gratitude.
By the time they returned home, their arms were full of bags filled with their purchases. Russia was exhausted but happy, feeling like they had taken another step toward becoming a family. He couldn’t wait to start setting up their daughter’s room, to create a space where she would feel safe and loved.
As they entered the house, China set the bags down and turned to Russia, pulling him into a gentle embrace. “I can’t wait to meet her,” China murmured, pressing a kiss to Russia’s temple.
“Neither can I,” Russia replied, resting his head against China’s chest. “I love you.”
“I love you too,” China whispered back, holding him close.
As they stood there in the warmth of their home, their hearts filled with anticipation and love, they knew that whatever challenges lay ahead, they would face them together, as a family.
