I feel like a fish out of the water.
I am sitting in this meeting room for just ten minutes right now and I already feel overwhelmed and out of place.
I keep telling myself it'll be okay, as I try to focus on what Dionne is saying in the front of the room.
She is discussing with us; the interns, our programs, our studies; yes, we'll be studying; again, and the rules.
I feel the urge to slide down in my chair and hide when I feel a pair of eyes on me. The manager is sitting at the beginning of the huge table where all of us are sat, wearing a grey designer suit that compliments his jet-black locks.
"You guys will be competing against the other candidates of the other corporations so, please each one of you should focus very well with their mentor" Dionne's voice comes back to focus. My eyes snap to him and find his eyes still on me, I avert my eyes looking back to where Dionne is standing.
My hands start to ache, I want to crack my fingers, but I wait till the meeting's over so I fidget with my fingers under the table instead. Cracking my fingers has always been a habit of mine when I get nervous since I was a kid and it grew up with me it seems.
Dionne's voice comes back as she says, "Today will be your first sessions so, I hope it's successful. Good luck buddies!"
I smile at her, she's adorable and warm; her presence at home took my mind off my raging thoughts a lot.
My phone lights up with more than a message, but I flip it over and I raise my eyes to find the guy sitting in the spot opposite from me looking at me. He's a fellow intern, I remember him introducing himself on our first day, but I can't quite remember his name. He gives off golden retriever vibes; golden hair, blue eyes and a cute smile; he reminds me of the boys I read about in my romance books.
He gives me a smile; too nice and I think I should smile back so; I give him a slight smile and look at the front again.
"You guys can go, have a drink or something; the meeting with your mentors will be in half an hour. Be ready!" Dionne says as she tells something to my so-called mentor as we start to clear the room.
Dionne gestures for me to stay and she finishes talking to him then he stands to leave. While leaving he bumps his shoulder into the guy that was smiling to me earlier as he leaves and the guy apologies.
Fuck, he's the one apologizing! Omer just looks at him and leaves.
The room clears up as Dionne gathers her stuff, I go to the front and help her.
"Can't wait for you to be the one standing here, sweetie!" she chirps.
I smile "After today, I'm starting to give it a second thought"
"Why so!" she asks concerned.
"It just felt hard"
"Yes, this is tough, but so are you. I'm sure you'll be the best"
"I wonder where do you get this certainty from" I laugh
"Because your CV says a lot, you are intelligent I can see that and you have the best mentor" I sigh irritated.
She straightens, "No, seriously listen and learn from him, if you did so, you'll touch the fucking sky"
"I will, don't worry" I say nodding.
"I'm not! Let's go have some coffee till the meeting's time comes." She says and we leave together.
