__________________________________Two years.
It had been two years after the news of both Kira's and L's death, and crime had sprung right back up again. The numbers that had been dwindling from Kira's name had all but risen drastically with criminals now knowing that there was no one who could take their name or face and kill them instantly, reveling in their freedom of crime once more.
Police were frantic.
People were scared.
No one felt safe anymore, not even within their own homes.
(Y/N) laughed at the sight—enjoying it even—as those who scrambled to put a stop to the violence only squandered and stumbled.
See what happens?
Kira would have made this all go away.
And if you had simply not gotten in his way, he wouldn't have had to kill the innocents.
But it was their fault anyway.
Currently, she was walking away from her school that gave an hour for lunch and into the city in hopes of finding someone—anyone—that she could take her anger out on, her eyes narrowing in irritation. The streets were crowded as usual, many people also going to eat, or going to and from work, or even just spending a day out. It was bright as the clouds didn't block the sun, the air warm, however a cold breeze balancing it out perfectly. Choosing a different alley than the others that she had visited previously, she shoved her hands into her pockets, her fingers curling around the hidden knife that she always brought along with her while her lips slowly stretched into a wide grin upon spotting the one whom she knew would die that day.
This is the only way.
The only way that I can continue Kira's wishes.
The person in question was a woman of about thirty, her dark hair cropped and her green eyes sharp, currently her thin fingers flipping through a pile of cash from the discarded wallet on the ground that belonged to the man who had also fallen. He was groaning from how she dug her heel into his lower back, the act cruel and malicious to anyone watching.
"This is quite a hefty amount of cash you were carrying," the woman crooned, leaning down and mocking him with the paper. "Now, why is that?"
He merely groaned in pain.
"Typical men," she scowled as she shoved the money into her leather jacket's pocket before walking away, her heels clacking against the concrete floor in a loud manner.
Not even five steps in did she whirl around. Gripping (Y/N)'s wrist which held a sharp knife in hand, the woman laughed in shocked amusement as she stared into the girl's unwavering eyes, the mere sight of her making her tilt her head in curiosity. After all, it was not every day where she was attacked so viciously with the intent of death by a random stranger—no less a young woman, by the looks of it.
"Now..." the woman licked her ruby lips, shoving (Y/N) away as she crouched down into a defensive stance. "...what have we here?"
"You're disgusting," (Y/N) answered, flipping her knife in hand as her gaze traveled around the woman's body, looking for the exact spot where she could strike while knowing her defense was quite skilled just by sight. "Yet you keep on living."
"That's very hypocritical of you."
"It may be... but at least I'm following a code only to kill people like you."
"Oh? And what are people like me?"
"People like you steal, hurt, and destroy," (Y/N)'s lips twitched into a bitter frown. "Your own lives were destroyed so to make yourselves feel better, you destroy others. You steal because you'll never feel satisfied with what you've got because you never had enough before. You hurt because you yourself were hurt. Or maybe you weren't, and are just rotten to the very core. See, we're human, so we fuck up, yet you people... you can't get your shit together. So, it spreads through you like a virus. And that is what truly is disgusting."
All it took was a second.
A second to make the woman's walls go down, which inevitably led to her downfall.
It was quick, too.
A shot at the neck, and then she had fallen, her emerald eyes losing their shine as the life drained from her body, spasming before going still. Wiping her knife along her cloths, same as she had with all other victims prior, (Y/N) smiled.
You were contemplating my words.
You questioned yourself.
To me at least, you died a regular person because you stopped and thought.
Pushing herself up, (Y/N) took the money the woman had stolen and placed it back into the still unconscious man's wallet along with the stolen, semi-bloodied knife. Gritting her teeth, her muscles straining and her breathing becoming shaky as she hoisted him up, she then used most of her strength to carry him to the police headquarters while gaining stares along the way. After explaining to the police what had happened, excluding the part where she had killed the woman and instead covering it up with a lie of using self defense, she then left the unconscious man in their care.
Saving people always made her feel powerful—that she was above all others. However, this feeling of euphoria passed and was replaced with one of helplessness, knowing that she could be doing better and that she could be better.
But she couldn't.
I can never surpass Kira.
I can never live up to what his expectations were.
I can never be like him.
Mumbling to herself bitterly, (Y/N) continued to sign paper documents late into the early evening until the police finally gave her leeway to leave only to find out that it was raining outside, the liquid coming down in torrents from the stormy skies.
Ah.
I love the rain.
Smiling to herself, she stepped out onto the cold and slippery sidewalk to begin walking home. Rounding her bend just before where the streets met to her house, she stopped short, her eyes having looked upward to watch as something appeared in the sky out of nowhere before falling. Her gaze tracked the black object as it hit the ground....what?
Speeding up, (Y/N) knelt by the item, finding it to be a notebook, and picked it up.
Hm?
A Death Note?
What is that?
