Disappointing?

Me?

The one that's going to carry on the duty of cleansing this world?

No, father.

The only true disappointing one is you.

"Is that really what you think of me?" (Y/N) questioned with utter detachment, her expression just as cold as her father's.

"It's what I think of your performance," Wayne deviated, pinching the bridge of his nose between his thumb and forefinger, exhaling softly in exasperation at his daughter before looking into her eyes once more. "(Y/N). I want you to succeed in life. But you won't succeed if you keep this kind of behavior and attitude up. I won't stand for it, and I'll make sure that your mother doesn't stand for it either."

Digging his heels into the carpet, Wayne pushed himself off the bed and walked out the door, closing it rather softly behind him compared to the heavy tension he created in the room.

(Y/N) scowled after him.

Fucker.

Staring at the surface of her desk, her fists tightening until the edges of her nails created dark crescent moons in her skin, she tried to calm herself down. Biting her tongue, hard, until the iron taste of blood filled her mouth, she urged herself to be calm. Breathing in deeply, the sound of her hammering heart eventually dying in her ear as it settled back into its comfortable rhythm, she collapsed back into chair and let the knuckles of her hand rest against her forehead.

I can't let him make me react like this.

I can't be influenced by my emotions, because emotions... are dangerous.

They lead one down a path.

Honestly, I've seen such resulting consequences from straying off decisions made by the mind instead of the heart.

It was truly disastrous.

I can't afford to make the same mistake again.

"Looks like your father and you aren't that close," Edu chuckled, his voice raspy compared to the silence of the room. "I'm not surprised."

(Y/N) shot a warning glare at the Shinigami before letting her neck crane backward so the crook of her neck was resting against the top curve of the chair, closing her eyes and allowing her mind to relax as well. She needed to make sure that no emotions of hers would influence her decisions.

I can't afford any mistakes.

None.

If I slipped up even once, it'll either cost me my freedom, or my life.

Just like Kira.

And... I can't help but compare myself to him.

He's the only one who I thought could actually do right to the world, and I wanted to follow that example as soon as the existence of the deathnote came before me.

It's comical, really.

But I want to surpass him.

I want to be the better judge of how to continue using this Death Note.

It's only human nature to want.

To be competitive.

Even to the dead.

"Do you want to know something, Edu?" (Y/N) finally whispered, breaking the tensity that had lingered, even after Wayne left, continuing even when Edu didn't answer. "When I first tested this notebook, and after finding out that it was real, did you know who I first wanted to kill?"

"If I had to guess, and judging from your reaction after speaking with him, I'd have to say your father."

"Of course you would," she laughed wryly, rolling her neck around so that her head was once again upright, her eyes having opened to meet his dark stare. "It's the only answer, isn't it?"

"The way you say it makes me wonder otherwise," he hummed in observance.

"You're right."

"Am I?"

"At first, I thought about using the Death Note on me," she spoke in a rather calm manner, the mere thought of the strong person in front of him ever resorting to such measures leaving Edu baffled. "I know what you're thinking... 'impossible,' right? Well, I couldn't do that. But then I did think of ending my father, and I couldn't do that either."

"So... what then?" Edu tilted his head. "Seeing as to how both of you are still alive, you must have reached some sort of conclusion with yourself that you're accepting of?"

"I did."

"And what was that?"

"Injustice gave me purpose, the clearing of injustice from this world... gives me purpose," (Y/N) smiled, her eyes hooding as they traced the lines of her wooden floor. "Light Yagami also saw this, however twisted his view had become. I'm the one that can see clearly out of those lenses, and I am the one that will finish his disposing of the rot of this world."

"How confidant you are."

"I have to be if I am going to see this through."

Someone is going to start taking action soon, and they're not going to let these killings continue.

But I'm not going to let them stop me.

L's successor, the Japanese police force...

They can't stop me.

But...

"Now that I think about it..." (Y/N) murmured under her breath, her voice then rising so Edu could hear. "I can kill anyone as long as I know their face and name, and as long as it's before their remaining lifespan is over, correct?"

"Yes," Edu affirmed.

"I want to see how far the rules of the Death Note extend, though I'm sure Light probably already exhausted this thought as well."

"Light did many things," Edu spoke up, leaning over her shoulder to see what she was doing, her gaze occasionally flicking upward to her computer that she had clicked on not a moment earlier. "But he was thorough and cautious. Two traits I'm sure you excel at as well."

"Thank you," she replied, continuing to write.

"What I want to know is why you're experimenting when you have no inclination to ever come into a situation where you'll have to use such tactics?"

"Because..." she gave a soft laugh, smiling eerily up at him. "Like you said, I excel at being thorough."
