「 THREE YEARS LATER 」

Ayako drove through her hometown with a small smile on her face, happy to be visiting after three years since she had graduated from college. It had been too long since she saw her family, and she had been eager to see them again. Now, after a day spent with them, she was ready to visit some of the places she used to frequent.

Her eyes snagged on a familiar cafe.

Her smile widened.

Pulling into the parking lot, she then entered the small building and ordered a piece of strawberry cake and some coffee before sliding into a booth near a window.

Hah...

This brings back memories.

Ayako couldn't help but let her smile mellow out a bit as she took a bite of her cake, glancing out the window towards the scenery outside. She remembered sitting in that same exact spot looking out at the same exact streets with (Y/N), one of her best friends from college that she had always spent her time with. But as soon as she thought of her, an overwhelming sadness consumed her. Quickly wiping away the tears that had begun to slip down her cheeks without her noticing, she grabbed her napkin and dabbed at her eyes, slowly letting out a breath as her hands lowered.

She usually wasn't that emotional.

But she couldn't help it.

So much pain surrounded her whenever she thought of (Y/N), and being in her hometown only strengthened that feeling.

She remembered that how she was feeling now was how she had felt three years ago when learning that (Y/N)'s house had burned down with her and her parents within, their bodies completely burned and almost unidentifiable when they were recovered from the wreckage. And as if such a horrible accident wasn't enough, the next day, Arata's body was found hanging from his window, a note written by him inside on his desk stating that he couldn't live without (Y/N).

Ayako swirled her coffee her with her spoon.

Even when she had been dating Arata, she knew that he always felt something for (Y/N).

It was so obvious in the way that he looked at her, in the way that he smiled with her, in the way that he always seemed to be laughing and filled with joy whenever she was around. And even though Ayako had been crushing on him so hard, she knew that she would never be able to change his feelings, and knew that no matter what, (Y/N) was still her friend no matter if they dated or not.
