__________________________________"Everyone... I'd like for you to meet our new transfer student," the teacher introduced, a pleased smile settling on her lips as she turned to the boy who just walked in. "Would you like to introduce yourself?"
As soon as the boy fully faced the class, a steady blush grew over the female population of the class's cheeks upon catching sight of him. With tousled brown hair styled in an undercut, piercing green eyes, and a rather charming smile, it seemed that he had instantly captured many of the students' hearts. (Y/N) stared down at him from her pew, her eyes somewhat narrowing.
"Hello," the boy greeted, turning towards the board to writing his name down in chalk, even his voice sounding pleasing to the ear. "My name is Hayato Arata. I transferred from Hoshi. I hope you'll take care of me."
Many sighed dreamily as Arata gave a low bow, the teacher then directing him to take a seat. (Y/N), having watched the whole encounter, merely rolled her eyes. While she had to admit that Arata was most definitely attractive, she had no time to think about boys or anything like that. Unfortunately, he decided to take a seat in her pew, much to her chagrin and disbelief.
"Hi," he smiled at her as he took his seat, laying his bag down beside his feet before fully turning to face her. "What's your name?"
"(L/N)(Y/N)," she answered bluntly, her chin resting on the palm of her hand.
Arata Hayato...
I really don't have time for him.
"(L/N)-san... huh?" Arata hummed, as if sounding out her name before reaching his hand out to shake her own. "Nice to meet you."
Yeah..." she half heartedly returned the gesture, missing the smirk that grew across his expression when she turned away.
"Aw... guess you have a new friend there, (Y/N)," Edu chuckled sarcastically from above her, inhaling sharply when she kicked out her foot and struck him in the leg. "Heh... seems you have no fear—you even have the audacity to attack a Shinigami."
She sent him a withering glare.
"I guess I should be thankful that you're in class currently," he hummed. "At least I don't have to listen to your whining."
(Y/N)'s brow ticked at that.
Maybe I've been too lenient with how I let him talk to me recently...
Clicking her tongue to the roof of her mouth in irritation, she turned away from Edu and back toward the front of the room where the teacher was mindlessly rambling on about whatever historical feats were accomplished in the eighteen hundreds. Glancing out the window, she felt her eyes narrow when once again spotting the ever lurking figure of Agent Gevanni—her new escort after Near had released her.
That L...
He really thinks the deaths will stop if he assigns me a babysitter?
He has to be joking.
"That a friend of yours?" A voice next to her whispered, making her almost jolt out of her chair.
Arata was far too closed for her liking, having leaned over to see what she was looking at—a fact that made her tense. Already, something about him rubbed her the wrong way, especially with how he acted so familiar with her.
It was strange.
"Yeah..." she affirmed, slightly moving away from him. "Could you back up?"
"Oh..." he raised an eyebrow, that smile he had when he first walked into the room seeming to grow. "Sorry about that. You just seemed... distracted. Since I'll be sitting next to you for the rest of the year, I thought it'd be nice to get to know you."
(Y/N) frowned at that.
What the...
What does he mean by that?
Why would he be sitting next to me for the rest of the year by choice?
Does he...
"Yes..." he continued softly as he leaned forward even more, their ability to stay hidden from the teacher's sight a given since they were in the back of the room—something that worked in his favor. "I mean... I believe we have a lot in common, right, Kira's Successor?"
She allowed nothing to show on her face.
Internally, she seethed.
The fuck!?
How the hell—!?
No, calm down, (Y/N).
Just... breathe.
"What are you talking about, Hayato-san?" She laughed his comment off lightly. "Why are you accusing me of something so horrible? Something I'm sure... you know is not true."
How did he figure it out?
Wait...
Is he another holder of the Death Note—the one who killed all those criminals?
It's possible...
So the reason he transferred... was to meet me?
"I'll let you in on a little secret then, (L/N)-san," Arata said to her, tilting his head as he propped it on his fist, staring at her quite intently. "When you have the eyes, you can't see the lifespan of another user of the Death Note. And right now..." He pointed above her head, then to his eyes, before continuing, "I find it interesting how I cannot see yours."
(Y/N)'s eyes narrowed.
I already know that.
Fuck.
Feeling her lips twitch, she could also feel her anger growing when he continued speaking.
"And another thing," he hummed. "You should really watch yourself in public. I mean, talking to yourself and even killing poor innocent people all the way out in Hadano City too... isn't that a bit risky?"
"You... were there that day," (Y/N) mumbled to herself, her eyes widening as for once, uncertainty crept around her heart.
I remember now.
I passed by him on the street—an encounter that should have been nothing.
But he has the eyes.
He knew my name.
He found out where I lived and went to school. He... did kill all those criminals to gain my attention.
To let me know that he isn't lying.
"So..." she leaned back in her chair nonchalantly, trying to ignore the cackling Shinigami beside her. "You know. What's the point in telling me any of this, then? What's your angle?"
"My angle?" Arata exhaled softly, shaking his head. "Can't it just be that I want to know you?"
(Y/N)'s frown deepened.
This man... he's dangerous.
