"They're here," Ayako whispered to (Y/N) the next morning upon nearing the gates of their college, finding men loitering outside covered head to toe in a type of protective gear along with face coverings.

(Y/N) almost scoffed at the sight of them.

Wow...

Guess they're really taking no chances, huh?

"Hopefully they'll just move on to the next school after they find out Kira's Successor isn't here," she murmured back, surprising Ayako from how confident she sounded. "Think about it. If anything, Kira's Successor would be somewhere more... influential."

"Yeah..." Ayako nodded. "I guess you're right."

Stopping in the line outside of the gates that only continued to steadily grow, it wasn't long before they finally reached the front where the guards asked for their bags. One removed and checked some of the contents of Ayako's bag before letting her pass. Then, when it was (Y/N)'s turn to have her bag searched, she couldn't help but be grateful—grateful for the information Edu had given her upon the risk of using a Death Note in public where there were high chances of someone accidentally touching it.

It's a good thing they can't check a student's body.

They wouldn't like what they'd find.

On the outside, (Y/N)'s face was a mask, but internally, she was smiling wickedly as she recalled the memory of her and Edu talking the previous evening.

"Edu... will the ability of the Death Note still be intact if a page, or a piece, is ripped off and a name is written?" She asked as she twirled around her chair to face him, watching as he gorged on apples that her mother had giver her as a snack.

"Yeah," he said in between bites. No matter how small the piece you rip off is, and as long as what you're writing with can make eligible characters, the effects of the Death Note will remain the same."

"Perfect."

"Who are you planning to kill like that?"

"I'm not planning on killing anyone," she replied, ripping out a page and folding it into her uniforms' skirt. "At least... not with this page."

"Oh, so it's just a precaution?"

"Precisely," she nodded. "Criminals will continue dying throughout the day because I specified what time I wanted them to die and how after writing their name the night before. I'm sure L knows this, but the public doesn't. They'll think Kira is actively killing every hour. Do you get what I mean?"

"I'm guessing public appearance is our ally in this, aren't I correct?" Edu questioned, his grin seeming to widen at her confirmation.

"As long as the public is on my side, or Kira's Successor's, side, the government and world leaders won't side with L," she gave a simple shrug. "They didn't before, and if their country or lives are threatened... I'm sure they'll do it again."

"How... truly malicious of you."

"It's not malicious," she smiled at him from her desk, only one side of her lips quirking upward. "It's only being one step forward in the game."

Without so much of a second glance behind her after the guard was done thoroughly checking her school bag, (Y/N) gave a brief smile that plastered itself across her face in an attempt to mask the extent of giddiness she truly felt before walking with Ayako back inside. What gave her pause was the small, almost hidden camera decorating the foliage of the school, pointed in a way where it would capture any and all persons entering the building.

Would you look at that.

They're surveilling everything, or more precisely, L is from wherever he is.

Bastard.

Narrowing her eyes, all humor having disappeared, she turned her head away and continued onwards. What she didn't notice, however, was the sleek, black van parked just a little ways on the street that caught all this on camera, as well as in multiple other angles as more were installed, nor the detective sitting on the chair inside said van with one leg propped up that his elbow rested against to mess with a lock of his snowy hair.

Near's eyes narrowed.

Hm...

Now that's... interesting.

"Spot anything, L?" Commander Rester questioned as he was the only other person in the car with Near, his gaze also focused on the black and white screens.

"Yes," he uttered as he printed out a picture of (Y/N) to hold up. "Look for this girl."

"Of course," he replied, his hands flying across the keyboard of the computer set in front of him, his eyes skimming the blue-lit screen before stopping and turning the device a little ways so Near could see as well. "I found her. (L/N)(Y/N)."

"Hm..." Near hummed. "Something about her interaction with Matsuda and Aizawa really stood out to me unlike the rest."

"How so?"

"For one, she seemed almost too happy about seeing them, like they needn't worry, or that she specially has no reason to worry," he explained, picking up the bandit figurine that he had scratched on the words 'Kira-S,' now setting it right in front of the ones made for the two men outside. "And for the last thing I noticed, she was able to pick out where we placed the cameras that were hidden, in my opinion, pretty well. Now, why is that?"

"She... may have caught it out of the corner of her eye due to lighting."

"That is always possible, however..." he trailed off as he let the figurine move across the chessboard that he had set up, having it knock down Mastuda's and Aizawa's pieces. "One wrong move of ignorance can lead to disastrous consequences."

"Understood," Commander Rester nodded. "What would you like done about her, then?"

Near said nothing for a moment at the question, instead staring blankly at the screen where (Y/N) had just been staring into the camera, and at him.

I wonder...

Who are you?

"L?" Commander Rester uttered, leaning forward ever so slightly to catch his attention, the leather chair squeaking with the action. "How do you want to proceed with her?"

"We'll begin monitoring her," Near declared. "After all, she very well could be Kira's Successor."
