__________________________________"So... what has made the great detective L decide to come all the way to my college?" (Y/N) asked as she glanced at Near from the corner of her eye. "If it were just to see me, I believe you would have already told me by now."
"And if I did say I was here just to see you?" Near hummed as he turned to face her. "What would you think then, (L/N)(Y/N)?"
Her eyes narrowed.
What the hell is he doing?
What's his angle?
"I'd think you were acting strange, L," she answered as she watched him turn back around to the front. "It isn't like you to try and play my game, especially if it means leaving your safe little haven of a Headquarters to come to my school."
"Yes, you'd expect that, right?" He murmured, propping head up. "But that's just what you do to me..."
"Hah?" She hasn't heard that last part.
Edu and Ryuk both gave raspy chuckles.
She glared at them.
Tapping her finger against her desk in agitation, she then looked to Arata next to her, cursing herself internally for allowing herself to make him relinquish his hold on his Death Note. She realized instantly that she had miscalculated how far Near would go to uncover her status as Kira's Successor, however she also knew that killing him as soon as he entered her school was too much of a risk. It was as if she were practically telling the rest of Task Force that she was Kira's Successor.
She couldn't have that.
Hypothesizing what Near possibly could have up his sleeve, she didn't connect that him being there was only because he wanted to figure out his feelings towards her.
It was baffling to him.
It was utterly puzzling how easily his emotions changed.
But they had.
And now he wanted to know why.
The next several weeks, Near made sure to stick closely by her side, not allowing her to stray too far from his line of vision. He knew that by doing so, he would be able to fully immerse and ingrain himself into her life, something that he needed to do to figure himself out, and to further prove that his suspicions of her being Kira's Successor were right. However, the more he thought about it, the more his worries grew.
If he accused her of such crimes, she would forever be locked away.
Away from him.
He despised such a thought.
Currently, he was walking down the halls of the school with (Y/N) towards the courtyard, the bell having tolled to signal the end of the day.
But he didn't want to leave her.
Everyday, he found himself thinking this same thing, and it drove him absolutely mad.
"What are you thinking about so intensely, Nathaniel?" (Y/N) mocked him, using his alias that was really just an elongated version of his name—something that she had no knowledge of. "Usually by this time you would be drilling me continuously... have you finally realized that you're entirely wrong about me being Kira-S? Or are you still be stubborn? I'll have you know that women do not find such a quality attractive..."
"I do not care what they think, and I am certainly not wrong about you being a Successor," he stated rigidly, shoving down the swell of emotions that were bottled inside of him.
This isn't working.
It was as if the more time he spent with her, the more his doubts grew.
Not about her being Kira-S, though.
But about himself.
(Y/N) glanced over at Near multiple times, her eyes narrowing the longer she looked at him, eventually saying, "I may not care for you in the slightest, L, but your silence is even more bothersome since it could mean something disastrous for me. What is it?"
Near blinked at her.
He hadn't expected her to ask something like that, and it made his heart speed up.
After that, he made sure to walk her home everyday, even loitering outside for some time so there might be a chance that he could catch a glimpse of her through her window. He knew it was wrong to do so, but he couldn't get enough of her presence. Everything she did, everything she said, and every time she looked at him made him hunger for her in a way he did not like.
But he couldn't control his urges.
Now, after four weeks of being at (Y/N)'s school, Near finally realized the answer to her question.
He couldn't live without her.
He didn't want to ever live without her now that he had found her.
Unfortunately, unknown to him, Arata had been watching them the entire time. His green eyes blazed with envy each day, the feeling only growing stronger that longer he watched and the more he felt as if they were becoming closer. Close enough to entirely exclude him from (Y/N)'s thoughts. His nails that dug deeply into his palms drew blood, his breathing was ragged, and his hair drew shadows across his face in the waning light that made him look all the more dangerous. Allowing his gaze to follow Near's car that picked him up everyday, Arata then looked to (Y/N)'s house.
She was his, wasn't she?
After their night of passion, wasn't it obvious?
Arata would never allow her to go to someone else, especially not some weak-looking transfer student that didn't know her as long or as well as he did. He knew every inch of her body, all the darkness within her heart, and everything she loved or despised.
Arata was (Y/N)'s.
And she was his.
He had to make sure she would never forget that.
With his resolve set, determination washing through his veins, Arata strode forward towards house and began to climb upwards to her window.
I'm coming, (Y/N)...
And I won't ever let you go.
