Walking down the sidewalk to college with Edu ever present behind her, his limp prominent as he stalked after her, (Y/N) hummed quietly to herself whilst letting her mind wander. She found it strange that Near hadn't called for her in quite some time, but disregarded the worry as quickly as it came.

She had no time to think of him.

Or the case.

If anything, she needed to utilize the then freedom she had to make sure he didn't suspect anything, and how to kill him.

Preferably in that order.

If she took Near's suspicions off of her and blamed it instead on Arata, someone she knew would take the fall for her, she'd be able to kill him quite easily since he would have already moved on. And in Arata's case, others would have no choice but to pin the blame on him if he confessed, and if he had a solid motive without an alibi.

Hm.

"That just might work," she murmured, tapping her fingers against the side of her leg, the bare skin warm in touch.

"What would work?" Edu's raspy voice came from behind her, his skeletal frame now looming over her shoulder as he met her gaze, his red eyes seeming to stare straight through her and into her twisted soul. "Has it got something to do with L's death? If so, I think you're gonna need his actual name if you want to kill him with the Death Note."

"I know that already," she rolled her eyes, glancing around to make sure no one heard her.

"So, this isn't about L's death?"

"It is... but killing him with the notebook... wouldn't it be even better if I did it with my own hands?" She smiled back at him, the look so purely innocent and friendly that it didn't match with what she was saying at all. "Killing the person who wants to stop me... who did stop my predecessor... wouldn't that be an ending that no one suspects?"

"I'm sure it wouldn't be."

"You don't sound convinced that I'll do it."

"No... I know that you'll do it," he hummed, the sound deep and throaty as he looked off into the distance toward where her school loomed closer and closer. "I know the type of person that you are—reckless, dangerous, unpredictable. If anything, you're more likely to kill L and then everyone around him just for the fun of it."

"You know me so well," she smirked.

But then the look faded.

I wonder, though...

What if Light's biggest mistake was actively trying to find a way to kill the original L?

Just like him... that's what I am doing.

I didn't want my stint with the Death Note to be just like his, but the more I think about...

Working her jaw in irritation from the sudden revelation, (Y/N) forced herself to take a step back from everything that she had done as Kira's Successor and really think about what she was doing. She knew that she was fucking up her chances, and the one thing that worried her more was that Near knew she was capable of killing someone, he just didn't know if she had a notebook or not.

Like Arata said...

Near can put me in jail at any time, he's just dragging this out so he can prove I'm Kira's Successor.

I can't let that happen.

See, what first led L to think that there were two Successors was because Arata suddenly killed 100 inmates, different from my killing style.

But if I were to do the same...

Leave a trail of notes...

Would he then have to rework his hypothesis so that there's only one Successor?

And then uncover that Successor... as Arata?

Stopping in front of the gates to her school, letting out an almost astonished and absurd laugh, (Y/M) knew that she had found the solution in making sure that Near would have no choice but to back down from investigating her. And once he did, once such restrictions were free, she would run. She would insist in a note left behind that it was because he still knew that she was a normal murderer.

Because he had caught her.

But she wouldn't let him catch her again.

She had enough money saved up where she could move to a different part of the world and live there comfortably for quite some time.

She could do that.

And she would revel in knowing that Near would be chasing after a ghost.

"You know, Edu..." (Y/N) murmured as she walked into the school's ground, waving to Ayako who had noticed her from far away and was now running towards her. "...this is getting very interesting."

"Oh?" Edu scratched his chin. "How so?"

"I just thought of something that could finally get L off of my back once and for all," she hummed out, leaving the conversation with Edu as Ayako finally reached her.

"Hey... (Y/N)..." she gasped out, having to stop and bend down to place her hands on her knees to catch her breath.

"Hey, Ayako. What's up?"

"Just wanted... to say... good morning..."

"Ah... I thought you were coming over since you wanted me to introduce you to Arata," (Y/N) laughed, watching as Ayako turned beet red at the suggestion. "Considering your reaction now and from yesterday, I'm thinking that you still want that to happen, correct?"

"I-I mean, yeah..." she stuttered out as she touched her two pointer fingers together nervously.

"It's fine," (Y/N) shrugged as the two continued to walk toward home room. "I'm fine with introducing you to him. Who knows, maybe he'll ask you out on a date after getting to know him?"

Ayako blushed again.

As they continued to walk and chat, (Y/N)'s mind was anywhere but their conversation, knowing quite adamantly that if she introduced Ayako to Arata, he would have no choice but to dole out some of his time for her, therefore leaving (Y/N) alone to do what she needed to do to have him take the fall.

And she would enjoy it.
